How much...

is your happiness worth?

Greg and I were talking last night about what's going on at work for me... I have a few options, including staying where I'm at to even see if they would be any impact to the four of us specifically (or roll the dice - if they let anyone on my team go, it'd be between myself and one other woman because we're my boss's least favorites.)

Of course, this means I'm stuck at a company I'm not happy in or with, no room for growth, no raises/bonuses, but more demands and responsibilities.

I could go out and get an office job somewhere else.. or at least try.  Everything posted right now would require ~30-40% paycut.  BUT... it'd be a steady job and possibly a new company I'd have a shot at building myself up in (versus now where there is nowhere I'll go up from my current role.)  These roles, I'd be able to go to work, do my work, and call it a day when I left.  Likely no weekend or evening work.

If you were in this kind of position, WWYD?

Re: How much...

  • I understand the whole thought process that you need to be happy where you work, and no amount of money can influence that.  However, will you be happy at home with a 30-40% paycut?  Can you guys get by with that much of a cut, will it cause stress on your marriage?

I don't think there is anything wrong with researching options but truthfully, at this point in time, I'd be afraid of switching jobs.  The economy is still very un-reliable and companies are starting to layoff again.  I'd be hesitant to start a new job because if this new company did start layoffs you may be one of the first to go if they go with the senority route.

  • I deal with this everyday.  I've been watching for other opportunities but nothing has come along.  I myself would choose to stay at the higher paying job.  Mainly because of my benefits.  Not many places will pay over $500 a month for insurance for both MH and me and pay all my gas and time off and flexibility.  While I hate my job anymore I feel like there would be even more added pressure on me if I were to take a pay cut and what if I end up just as unhappy at the other place.  There is no gurantee that it will be a great place to work.  I figure that I will look while I still have a job because I certainly don't want to go on unemployment and that way if something comes up I can't refuse than that's great...if not I will just keep sticking it out.

PS for me it's a little different because it's a family business.  I want this company to succeed not just for me but for my whole family.  So I have a little more invested in my job (even though it drives me nuts).

  • I'm in the minority so far.  If you can afford it, find the lower paying job.  I know it's not ideal, but the fact that you can't move up where you are and could possibly move up elsewhere would make me want to leave.  Plus, happiness is important.  I think it all comes down to budgeting for you guys and seeing what you can (and can't) afford.  Obviously if you can't pay your bills, you need to stick it out until you find a job where you can, but if you can make it comfortably I would do it.

  • I know exactly how you feel. I am going through the same thing. I think money is really important unfortunately and there is not guarantee that if you take a job with a paycut that you would like it anymore. I would keep looking till you find what you need. Unless you are miserable, like making yourself sick miserable (I have been there) and then it's not worth it.
  • I've been here and I got the hell out.

My suggestion is to try and find the new job first, unless it gets to the point that Jo mentioned - where you're making yourself sick.  No one LOVES their job, but you shouldn't dread going in every day.  By the time I made the decision to leave, I'd been coming home crying every day for about 3 months and had been seeing a therapist b/c of the stress related to it.  I don't wish that on anyone.

If you guys can afford the pay cut, take it.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • There's no guarantee you'll like your new job either. I say stick with your current job while continuing to search for new opportunities. It doesn't hurt to look and interview. You can always say no.
