DH lost his job :-(

We sort of knew this was coming since the Arizona economy is so bad and it is estimated that over 50% of architects in the area are unemployed, but it is still rough.  Yesterday he came home and said that he'd been asked to go on furlough for a month until they get another project going in the office.  He's the only employee besides his bosses who own the company.  So, while the prospect is there for him to start back up in a month, we're basically taking this as being laid off and he's moving forward with searching for new jobs.  This might just be the catalyst we need to get back to the east coast.

Re: DH lost his job :-(

  • I'm sorry :(  Hopefully he gets called back or hears something about a new job soon.  It's tough here, too...well, pretty much everywhere...but fingers crossed for him!
  • That sucks!  I hope he finds something else.  What kind of architecture does he do?  I am not sure of the market back here, in general I think thinks are picking up.  I know we are super busy at work.
  • OMG, I'm so sorry to hear this news Becki!  This economy is just terrible and it's so scary to hear all these people getting laid off.  I sure hope he can find something fast and like you said, maybe this is your ticket to coming back east.
  • I'm sorry to hear that!  I know how scary and frustrating it is...my DH was laid off in May and is still unemployed.   It was the push for us to move closer to my family.  Luckily I have a stable job and he's been able to stay home with Addy for now.  But we are hoping he finds something soon... and I'll send positve thoughts for your DH to find something too!
  • I'm sorry!  I hope he either gets called back or you decide to move back home.  Keep us posted!
  • i'm sorry to hear that!  hopefully he gets a call back or a better opportunity comes up.
  • I'm sorry to hear about your DH.  I really hope things begin to improve for everyone.
  • Sorry to hear about your Dh's job.  It's such a scary time.  Hope he finds something else soon, or you guys decide to come back East!

Right now the company that he is working for does a lot of schools and low income housing.  At his last office their main client was for intergenerational day centers (Basically daycare centers where elderly AND children went.  There were areas for both could spend time apart as well as areas that they could interact).  He did some job searches earlier this week and found that there were a total of 3 jobs posted for the state of Arizona in the whole month of December.  Apparently things are looking up back east in the DC area.

  • Thanks for the support, ladies!  So far we're doing ok.  DH is meeting with his bosses next Friday to find out how likely they are to get some of these jobs for which they have proposals out.  Hopefully we'll know more then.  For now he's updating his resume and portfolio and searching jobs locally.  After next Friday if things aren't looking good he'll probably open it up to a national search.

  • My brother works for a company that constructs mainly schools.  I will ask him which architects they work with on their jobs.  Things specific to that type of architecture should pick up in the next few months because most school construction jobs up here were put on hold due to the state budget.  I know he said they were going to have a lull during/right after the budget passing because schools did not know how much money they were receiving from the state so they were not moving forward on building.
  • I'm so sorry!  I hope things turn around for him & everyone else who is looking too!

  • Oh no! I'm very sorry to hear this. I hope that things work out soon and he is able to return to work.
  • I'm late responding since I haven't been on here for a couple weeks but just wanted to say that I'm sorry and that I hope your DH is able to either find a new job or that this will be the push to get you back to the east coast.  I'll be sending positive vibes your way!
