WWYD - Car Insurance?

We just found out today that our car insurance for our big truck is going to be canceled. State Farm cited too many claims. All of those being deer hits. This policy is supposed to be non-cancelable, and it has been the same policy since 1993. I called and told the lady I spoke with exactly that. She didn't even care to try to explain it to me. She just said they have the right. When I asked to speak to someone else they were busy. She just kept saying that we have plenty of time to find insurance elsewhere. We do have until March 1st, but I am worried no one else will take us.

This is going to affect our home owners and our multi-vehicle discount.

We can report them to the insurance commission, which I am sure is a big hassle. What would you all do?

Re: WWYD - Car Insurance?

  • I'd look into getting all my vehicles and my home insured somewhere else.  If thats not possible (perhaps this will be an issue elsewhere and not just with SF) I'd try and work with them or consider selling/replacing that truck.  Is there a reason that vehicle has had so many deer hits?  Is it your only vehicle?

  • The reason there has been so many hits on that truck is because he drives it to work. Work is an hour each way through rural WV, which is like white tail deer central. He is traveling at peak movement time (6pm to 7pm and 7am to 8am). Luckily it isn't our only vehicle, which actually have two others. I would suggest selling it, but it is DH's baby.

I figure we will end up moving all our policies, but I just kind of wondered if it was worth it to file something with the insurance commission.

  • I'd move everything to another provider.  There should be - most likely in small print - a stipulation in your policy that after a certain amount of money, you'll be dropped from the provider, regardless of cancellation. It also could be a case of something you could have avoided, which insurance providers like to use as excuses - they can suggest that if your H could have driven a different way home, the hits could have all been avoided. They have to pay your current claim, but after they hit that certain dollar amount, they're free to walk away. People used to call my prior attorney's office about claims a lot, but unless they're not paying your current claim, the provider is usually OK.

And frankly, if they're going to drop you for this, what about your homeowners policy? Would they drop you if there was a fire? Flash flooding issues? I'd be wary of them getting rid of me after something really bad!!

I'm friends with everybody in this office. We're all best friends - I love everybody here. But sometimes your best friends start coming into work late, and start having dentist appointments that aren't dentist appointments. And that's when it is nice to let them know that you can beat them up.
  • I have been shopping around online, and we are definitely moving. I would say DH just met his limit, like you said. I haven't sat down and read the fine print yet. They did pay his last claim which has been 2 months ago, I think. You bring up a good point though, stjoes. I don't really trust that office anymore.

    Thanks girls!

  • Is the person you talked to at your agent's office or the corporate office?  My family has had State Farm for over 30 years and we've had many many claims - dropping us has never even been suggested.  If it is someone from the agent's office I would talk to the corportate office if for no other reason than to file a complaint about the agent.

  • I agree with Lucky. I'd call corporate and complain. Overall, SF is generally a really good company, but maybe the  numbers are hurting your particular agent and they want to better their numbers. Who knows.  If corporate backs them, let them know they are losing all of your policies.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I dont know if you have looked into switching recently but around here SF seems to be higher priced than anybody else by a significant margin so this might be a good thing for you in the end anyway.  I would complain to corporate though but I dont think I would contact an insurance commission - just seems like a hassle that probably wouldnt amount to anything.
  • Thanks for all the advice, girls. We called again, and apparently the non-canceling part didn't carry over when J bought this new truck. It was in the fine print somewhere. No big deal I guess, but we will be moving all our policies, just so we can hopefully get multi-policy discounts and stuff.

  • Have you looked into Liberty Mutual? I know every insurance company has good and bad reviews, but personally, when I got into my major accident in December of '08, they were friggen awesome.  Because of how they handled our car insurance, we've since moved everything over to them. They aren't the cheapest, but totally worth the service we got, IMO.

  • I haven't looked into them, yet. But, I definitely will. Thanks!
