s/o heating/electric/gas bills...

What do you think the cost of running a space heater would be on our electric bill to the cost of actually using the heat?  Our heat is electric if that matters.

DH thinks the costs would be pretty much the same, but I think using the space heater and keeping the heat very very low would make the costs lower.

We live in a 650 sq. ft. condo.  So we'd have it in our living room and we would only have the space heater on us during the evening while we're watching t.v. or something.  We turn the heat off at night while we sleep anyway, because we get so warm sleeping with all the blanketss that we don't need to have it on, so we wouldn't run the space heater at night.  (which I think would also be dangerous to do that anyway)

Obviously, the space heater would use electricity, but I think the cost of that electricity compared to the cost of our heat would be lower, right?

Our electric bills in the summer are usually $50-$60.  In the winter when we use the heat every day, they're at around $120.

  • I don't know if it works or not, but we basically use our fireplace in the same way.  We have three levels and we really don't use the bottom level and we're really only upstairs when we're sleeping, so there is no point in keeping the whole house warm.  We usually set the heat at 60-66 and just use the fireplace on the second level when we're home if we need the extra warmth.

  • I think it would cost less.  It takes more energy for the system to heat up your entire apartment than it would for the space heater to run.
  • Why dont you try it for a month and see what happens?
  • I like Beck's suggestion but I am pretty sure it will cost less....maybe even way less!
