Seriously about to have a breakdown!

Ok, I know that I have totally been MIA the last few weeks/months but I started my nursing program AND a short certification program so I can work part time while in school.

Last week, the day before my first day of classes, my grandfather passed away pretty suddenly (my last grandparent) so it was a REALLY terrible way to start the new year and the first day of classes...

Then,  last night we got a call that DH's grandmother was put on life support and isn't expected to make it through the week.  It is so terrible, we are SO close to her, and she raised my DH.  I just don't think I can take this all over again just a week after my grandfather.

On top of it, it is seriously impacting my certification.  If I miss any more classes ( I missed 9 hours total, can NOT miss any more than 10), I will fail, I need my cert. to work in my new field and earn $$$.  I brought it up to my instructor and she was SO not helpful, basically telling me I had to choose  my husband's family OR my Cert. class....  I can't take this class over for at least another month, and would lose the money I have paid so far, and RE-Pay for the new course, all the while, earning NO money while waiting for other cert. class. (I'm sure I could fight this, given the extenuating circumstances, but I really don't have the time or energy at this point to re-hash everything to someone, and I would totally lose it)

On top of that, there is TONS of family drama going on on both sides of our families as a result of this and other things plus the stress has cause my DH and I to have a huge fight...

I feel like my stress level and emotions are out of control and it doesn't help that I am PMSing this week!  I just don't know what to do and needed to vent to you ladies, you're a neutral third party.

Re: Seriously about to have a breakdown!

  • I'm so sorry you're going through all this--it's a lot to handle all at once.  No advice, just wanted to offer some sympathy and hugs.

Also, it sucks that your program isn't more understanding--is there anyone else you can talk to about this besides your advisor?  Maybe a department head or something?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • You could definitely try talking to the department head about the situation, and if you think it will be too hard to talk about again, try typing him/her an email.

As far as family drama, as cruel as it sounds, you are just going to have to let your family know that you are at a crucial point in your career and education and they need to NOT involve you in things for a few weeks until this all calms down.  As soon as you are more established in school, you will eagerly lend an ear to everyone's problems but there is nothing you can do to help at this stage.

And it may help to just sit down with your DH and talk over how stressed you are.  I don't know what the fight was about, but if you're both ready to make amends for it, then a discussion about how to deal with the current situations could help.  I'm sure he understands everything that you are going through, and what is on the line, but is stressed out as well because of the family situation, making him more likely to snap.

When I went back to school full time in addition to my full time job and wedding planning, FI and I were bickering constantly.  I was so tired all the time, and during one of our little spats I went off on him about how tired I was, and how stressful everything was, and how things were making me feel, and what I needed from him, and he has been much more supportive ever since and we never bicker any more.  I just had to stress to him that we needed to figure out how to work our day-to-day now that things were changing so much.  It has actually brought us a lot closer.

  • I am so sorry this is happening to you---and all at once.  That is just awful.  Your instructor sounds pretty heartless.  I hope he changes his mind about letting you miss class.
  • I'm sorry, I hope things calm down for you soon.

  • I'm so sorry. I just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking of you and your H. These things are so hard and cause families to do some crazy stuff. I hope your class is more understanding going forward. Good luck with nursing school too! Hopefully that will be an outlet for you.
  • That's terrible. I hope it all works out and hopefully you and your hubby come out of this situation stronger!
  • Thanks for the T&P... My nursing program teachers have been so supportive, it is my instructor in my cert. class that is being completely insensitive and difficult and unfortunately the Cert. class is not part of my nursing program, but I have to do it so that I can work and make $$ while in school.

I have been trying to stay out of the drama but it is so hard because ultimately my extended family will never be the same and it is sad that it will most likely end up as a long drawn out legal battle.

     Thanks for listening Smile
