Smelly Cat (Warning: Gross)

I could not stop humming this song to myself during lab today and then got the giggles that became contagious. The whole class (15 students) shared dissection responsibilities on 1 cat so it wasn't terrible - until the quiz at the end. We were quizzed as a class at the end and nobody wanted to step up and dissect the bugger to show the cat's penis (it was on our list of organs we had to find and show the instructor). Finally I got tired of everyone looking at each other and grabbed the scissors and snipped away. Basically I had to circumcise a dead cat. Ick!

Today probably ranks at the top of my list of "bizarre days I never want to repeat and I'd rather not remember."

  • Despite the ick factor, that was a very amusing story. And since I won't be having dinner for at least 1.5 hours, I enjoyed reading it :)

  • The cat lover in me wants to know, was this a cat that was raised for the sole purpose of being dissected by students or did it die of other causes? I love my cat too much to even think about doing this. You are a brave woman!
  • glad you survived.  Doesn't phobe from friends sing a song called smelly cat?  Or something like that.

  • I believe cats used in dissections died of natural causes (ie not farmed for the purpose), which I'm not sure is the same case with fetal pigs used for dissection, but Bio 1 and 2 were too many years ago to count to hold me to that.

I'm kinda saddened, KB, that they split 1 cat between so many people. When I did it in high school, we had partners and we worked on them for over a week. You think day 1 smells bad?!  (PS, we named ours Toonces)  But getting to do the majority of the dissection yourself (or as second in command) you get a lot more out of the experience. Otherwise, it's not really worth it.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • That's hilarious... i hated dissecting the cats... our whole classes cats started to rot and smell by the end of the semester... they smelled horrible! We did find a pregnant cat though... it was very interesting to see!

btw.. the cats are humane society cats they end up having to be euthanized.. thats what our teacher told us. So not farmed for it but not necessarily dying of natural causes either.
