Anyone have IBS?

I'm wondering based on Dr. Google if this is what I have and have had for awhile.  Based on what I've read, there's  not much you can do aside from diet, exercise, stress management, etc.....

Any experience?  Was your GP helpful in diagnosing, treating, etc?

Re: Anyone have IBS?

  • My MIL has that and trust me, I can tell you everything about it.  Wink  She was diagnosed by her GI and it's the result of a lower intestinal issue.  Spicy and salty foods and salads irritate the condition.  She had a surgery to correct the problem, but it still plagues her from time to time.  Note: she has anxiety over everything, eats poorly and doesn't exercise.

I don't have any personal experience with it, sorry.  I hope you are able to get it figured out though.

  • my DH has issues with crohn's disease and IBS, so i've become familiar over the years with poo talk :)

i would talk about it with your doctor though, as you have no idea what's going on inside there until someone takes a look.

  • I also think I have it (never been "officially" diagnosed) and my mom has it.  Dairy with lactose is my big culprit.  I really have to watch the dairy intake, as well as drink lactose free milk.  Taking probiotics has helped a TON.
  • CJ, sounds more like you're lactose intolerant, not an IBS sufferer. Huge difference in symptoms and onset.  IBS sufferers have aversions to a lot of foods, and I know from my aunt and cousin having it, before it's diagnosed, the person with it can be pretty sick and have significant weight loss.

To richardslove, good luck! I hope for your sake it's something a little more fixable! Definitely see your GP, or if you don't need a referral see an internist or GI specialist.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I don't have IBS, but I used to have some issues and found some of the ideas & suggestions in this book helpful at the time.
  • I have Crohn's disease, and my sis has IBS. She usually manages it by not eating too many starchy/greasy foods and light exercise. I've found eating dark greens like spinach helps my digestive tract and staying away from starchy foods has helped immensely. Of course, people tend to react differently to food and diet, so it may be different for others. I would try to adjust an eating habit here or there to see if it helps out. Good luck.
  • I have it.  I first went to my GP who checked to make sure it wasn't celiac disease.  When that came back negative, he suspected IBS, but sent me to a GI who then diagnosed it.  He really helped me manage it just by changing my diet (and not dramatically).  I recommend keeping a sort of food journal so that you know which foods are triggers for you.
