Medication possibly making libido non-existent?

Hi everyone! I have posted on the Military Nesties board and lurk on here alllll the time! The H and I are trying to figure out what is causing my libido to be soooo lowwww! I love my H so much and find him very very attractive.. but I am NEVER in the mood. We have great sex.. but just not very often. I find myself thinking my medicine has something to do with it.. I have been on an antibiotic for many years due to a ocular disease I have. Could this be the cause of my low libido? The H and I had sex shortly before we got married (he was a virgin, I was not) and it was great, and still is! I always say after we are done making love, "why don't I want to have sex more!! that was soo great!!". But still, not waiting it is starting to hurt my H feelings and I want to figure out what is causing it! I also am on Yaz and take a womens daily multi-vitamin. Should I talk to my OBGYN about this? Could this be a sign of something more serious that I am not thinking about? Any thoughts are greatly appriciated!

Re: Medication possibly making libido non-existent?

  • A lot of BCPs decrease sex drive, I would think that would more likely be the reason rather than the antiobics.

  • awesome! I will make an appointment with my OBGYN and change BC...any suggestions? I also have chronic ovarian cyst so the BC helps with that. I was thinking about getting an IUD.. do you have to have already had a child to get one? We do want kids but not for another 3-5 years... sorry for so many questions!

Unfortunately decreased libido can be a problem with any hormonal birth control.  As far as an IUD, it depends on your doc.  some won't put one in if you haven't had any children, others will.

Some dr's will not give you an IUD if you are of a certain age, and don't have kids. Since you have the extra factor of the cysts however, the Dr might consider it for you. Also, if you have a good relationship with your Dr they might have less of a problem with it. I would ask if there is another type you could try before taking the IUD route. Alot can change in 3-5 years, and you guys might want to remain flexible. If not though, I'd definatly get one and if my Dr wouldn't do it, I'd find one that would.

  • I agree that it could definitely be your BC. My sex drive has also been non-existent since I've been on the pill. I just went off the pill a few days ago to see if that helps with my migraines, so we are definitely hoping that will help with my sex-drive too!

  • Just wanted to give a little insight to IUDs. I got one almost 2 years ago, ironically the day my husband proposed (he didn't know I was getting it, I didn't know he was driving 6 hours to propose that day)! The actual implantation was horrendous for me. It only takes like 3 minutes, but they "clamp" your uterus straight and that is about as fun as it sounds. Once it was in I was fine, just had cramps for the rest of the day. The spotting sucked as it implanted. It was like 3 months for me! But now I love it. I get a period for maybe 3-5 days, super light, once every few months. One downside is my periods are not regular since they are so far apart, so they come as a surprise but they are so light it is no big deal really. Overall I love it far more than the pill which I had been on for years. Good luck in your decision!

  • thanks so much everyone! Vworonec did you have a child before you got the IUD? I was reading that usually its not good to get one before you have children? true or false?

According to my doctor, false. The risks of becoming infertile are very low for the average woman (less than 1%), but of course you should talk to your doctor in case you have a condition that could increase this.

So why do they say it's better to have had kids already? A) It hurts a lot less if your cervix has had trauma before. B) You have a higher risk of your body expelling the IUD if nothing has been in your uterus before. C) You have a higher chance of deciding to have kids and having it removed, which might negate the savings depending on your insurance.

I'm only 21, never had kids, and just got it put in. It hurt a lot during insertion, but then it was just like cramps for the next few days.

  • I got an IUD after my second child but I knew I was done with children and I was 38 when I got it. It's true they say you should have had a child already and I think the reason is because I believe there is a small risk for the device to potentially perforate your uterus which I think inhibits your ability have children in the future. Discuss it with your doctor. I found that BCP made me not want sex.
  • Sorry for the late response. No I don't have any children. I have had it just shy of 2 years now and I just turned 24 on Christmas. I asked my doctor about the kid thing and she said that that "rule" started out in the beginning because IUDs came out in the free love era and they wanted people to get them if they were in steady long term (most likely married) relationships so that STDs wouldn't become a problem. But since I had only ever slept with 1 person, ended up becoming my husband, she felt fine giving it to me. We had been dating just over 7 years when I got it.

Funny side note:  I went in and asked to change BC cause I never remembered to take the pill. She was like "Let's do this!" So wham-bam done right then and there. Then's she's like "try not to have sex for at least 24 hours, 48 hours is best." Since my boyfriend at the time lived 4-5hours away I was like "No problem, I'm not seeing him for 4-6 more weeks." Well... he surprised me that night and proposed! Talk about less than perfect timing. haha. But my girlfriends and I laugh about it now. Stick out tongue
