Do your dog(s) sleep with you?
Luka had been sleeping in his crate, but now we are trying to transition him to sleep upstairs with us on a dog bed. We started working on this Saturday night, and I have not had a good nights sleep since. He keeps hopping from our bed (we are okay with him sleeping up there now but we know he won't fit well in a couple of months as he does not fit all that well at 70lbs) to his and then seems like he can't sleep. So I keep waking up because he is moving around so much. Any advice?
Re: Do your dog(s) sleep with you?
If she wants to. Generally, she spents the whole time on her bed, but if she's cold, she comes up. She stays at the end of the bed and sleeps pretty still, so it's not an issue.
When DH is gone, she usually sleeps with me, especially if it's cold.
Foster dogs- never.
I would move his crate to your room and transition him that way. It sounds like he's restless and going from crate to all of that freedom may just be too much, too soon for him.
All three animals sleep with me. DH doesn't like it when the dog is in the bed though because Arthur likes to be in the middle and he'll take up a lot of room and covers. So he's usually invited up for cuddling and then we tell him to go to his bed. But, he always joins us in the middle of the night. If he's smart about it he'll come to my side so he doesnt disturb H and get kicked out again.
We're up and down a lot with them. It takes getting used to, but it really doesnt bother me. It bothers H, but luckly (for the animals) because of our opposite schedules we only sleep together a few nights a week. It's much easier to have a bed full of restless animals when there's only one human.
Simon was crated during the day when we first got him until we moved to Lowell and then he refused to go in the crate.
He sleeps in his bed during the night. More now since we got the kitten. He cuddles in the morning or when he's cold and I let him sleep with me when DH travels (which is a bunch!).
The kitty sleeps on our bed at times and on our pillows. We keep the door closed so he's in the room with us.
This is where my dog sleeps...the only way we could get her to stay still after her leg surgeries was to let her sleep in the bed with us. She kept trying to escape her crate and then we tried to let her stay on her bed and she kept trying to get into bed with us. We caved in. This was 2 years ago and we can't get her out without suffering a week of crying in the crate. I've honestly gotten used to it and I like her to stay in the bed with me when DH travels.
Oh I totally didn't give you advice. Simon knows "go to bed" and he jumps off our bed goes to his bed... he makes a big grunt everytime just to let us know he's unhappy. Maybe you can teach him that? Simon also gets grumpy and growls if we move around too much and disturb him (sorry, I didn't know it was his bed). So it's good if they learn when it's ok to come up (I think).
Poor guy has been cold and has been whimpering in the middle of the night-- this is proof after I left for work one day... he was snuggling in bed with DH
If you do it, do it now. I would not want to train a puppy and have a newborn at the same time!
haha, I'm in the same situation. My cat sleeps right between my feet so I can never cross them or she sleeps right in the middle of us. She gets up so early in the morning to be fed as well and meows until one of us gets out of bed. I want a dog so bad!!!
He usually starts off in our bed and ends up somewhere else. A lot of the time he curls up on MH's side of the bed.
Sometimes we stay at my parents or if we're all down the cape their 65lbs dog sleeps with us. She's too big for a queen size bed. She's slept in our king bed with us before and it wasn't a big deal.
Brady sleeps with us all the time now even though he has a bed in the room (which he only uses to roll on after he's had breakfast, haha) but in the summer he usually ends up hopping down and sleeping on the floor since he gets hot.
I don't have much advice except make sure he has a really inviting bed and maybe once he's too big to be comfortable in your bed, he'll transition to staying in his own.
(The gate thing that jcam suggested sounds like a great idea though! )
