ok so I'm going to admit i have a guilty pleasure of watching this show "The Secret Life of an American Teenager" I only started watching last year, i'm not even sure how i got sucked in... has any1 watched it? It's about a 16 yr old girl who gets pregnant and decides to keep the baby the first 2 seasons kind of go through her whole pregnancy and all the things that pop up in high school life..etc.
Well ok so i started to think about how absolutely disturbing this show is. So a quick run down of the weird things that happen on this show... not only does the baby daddy cheat on his new girlfriend all the time but his girlfriend also was cheating on him with her stepbrother at one point, then an uber christian girl has sex for the first time and her dad ends up in a plane crash so she swears off having sex bc she thinks she killed her dad... now 2 weeks ago uber Christian girl's mom tells her instead of sex with her boyfriend she should "take matters into her own hands.", this week you see the girl sitting in her room with candles lit, rose petals on the bed and a big old smile on her face. Later she sees her mom downstairs and basically admits that she had in fact "taken matters into her own hands." Now these are the things that stick out in my mind the most.. just the tip of the iceburg of what happens on the show.
What makes me suuupppppeerrrr disturbed about all this is not only is the show on ABC Family at 8pm and filled with high school kids having random sex with different partners but it's also geared toward the teen market. And we wonder why there are so many pregnant girls under the age of 18. My 13 year old SIL watches this show! I mean ok they teach awareness and each show ends with a public service announcement type ad but really? my 13 yr old SIL and all of her friends are watching this show, learning about things that i probably didn't know about until i was at least 16/17...i'm pretty sure last weeks episode also included a mention of oral sex and a bunch of the kids skipping school.
Now i'm no prude or anything but its really scary to think that kids are exposed to stuff like this. I'm locking Gio up in his room until he's 25.
Re: Disturbing...
They throw a little bit of it in there but so far this season (3 episodes) i think i've only seen the baby maybe once or twice! They try to unglorify it but i dont think it's real effective. They made it seem easier for her to keep the baby so far. i haven't seen her struggle too much so far.
Um, wow.
I have never seen this show and now will def make it a point to keep it that way. I can't imagine tweens and teens watching this crap.
Blech.
I agree Pammy! I love the show but it's totally not for teens or tweens at all. It's amazing what they put on TV for teens to watch.
But then I think back and when I was a teen I watched 90210 and Melrose and weren't they just as bad? But I definately don't want Collin watching this stuff.
Ruthie??!? I want to see this show now so I can see her in it, haha. I used to watch 7th Heaven alllll the time. I've never seen this show however. When is it on?
I'm a fan of this show, too. Because I love Molly Ringwald, but this show is just strange. The storylines like revolve so quickly and I feel like I'm lost half the time I'm watching it...because I feel like something goes past my head. The sex crazed teenager plotting to hook up with Ricky, or her fooling around with her step-brother (non-blood related) she's just a horndog/slut. They portray her to be a smarty-pants for books-wise, but a total dumb @ss in love. I don't know this show gets me hooked, and then it's dumb at times, too.
I hate that it's a Disney show....but they always advertise for safer sex, abstinece is key, they promote the sexual awareness, and always pushing the kids to talk to their parents about "sex." So many teenagers are having sex...maybe the goal is to make sure kids are aware of the consequences and talk to their parents more about it. Maybe less teen pregancies could occur or safe sex could be practiced.
i think the problem is no matter how much you encourage kids and parents to talk openly about sex, safe sex, erc, its just not going to happen in most situations. Hell, I am 27 and i feel weird knowing my parents know that i have sex lol
But yes, the acting is horrible and the storylines are crazy...but yet i continue to watch
Ditto...stupid ABC programming.
It sounds pretty realistic to me. This is what kids are seeing in school every day. I think its important to expose it to them even if it seems early. My mom was VERY open with me so I knew all about sex, abortions and lots of other things. There's no reason to shelter kids from it but it should be monitored by the parents. I have a friend that watches the show with her 13 year old daughter. They watch it and talk about it. I would do the same.
I think 90210 was just as bad. There were a lot of topics on there that were considered "grown up".~~~MARRIED BIO~~~
i wouldn't know I didn't watch much TV when 90210 was on.
Not saying to shelter kids but some of this stuff i feel like could be done in a more tasteful manner or maybe more educational. Just because its being done by kids in middle school or high school doesn't mean it should be shown to those who haven't been exposed. And unfortunately not many parents are able to monitor the shows their kids watch on a daily basis even with the V-chip restrictions and internet settings.
Are you saying that its the network's responsibility to parent our children? If so, I disagree.
If parents can't monitor their childrens' TV watching habits then they shouldn't have TVs. I know my kids won't have TVs in their rooms. At the same time, I'm not that concerned because I know my kids will be exposed to this kind of stuff by me.
I think most kids know about this stuff'. Its not secret. Did you know that the US has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the world? Do you know that jr high school kids all over the country are being caught having sex in the back of classrooms and under stairwells? And its everywhere, not just in urban areas. If you think that kids have no idea, you're being naive. Now its just on TV.
