PG related questions

My LO keeps getting hick-ups. I've read this is normal but it's happening almost every day now. Is this okay? Is there anything that I'm doing that is causing this?

When your LO moved in your belly did it ever hurt? Sometimes this little guy moves and it takes me breath away it hurts so bad. Or is this what they call BH?

Do contractions contract all over your belly or just in one spot?

TIA!

Re: PG related questions

  • I'm pretty sure the daily hiccups are normal.  It hurt me sometimes when he was kicking in my belly - he'd get all the way up under my ribs and get to my lungs, which caused me to lose my breath.  I'd often have to try to move his leg or arm or whatever was there.

But these were times when it was just a swift kick, so it only hurt for a bit - nothing prolonged.  Does yours just hurt for a minute, or is it longer?

I've never had BH, so I'm not sure about that, and my contractions were all induced, but they were like REALLY bad menstrual cramps (x100!)

  • hiccups are totally normal.  My MW brought it quite a while ago (I think before I had even experienced them).  She just said it's a good sign that the baby is happily swimming around in amniotic fluid and not to worry about them at all - even when they seem kind of forceful (like move your belly).  She did say not to count a hiccup occurrence as a movement for purposes of keeping an eye of baby's movement.

As for painful movements.  Yes I have had some that take my breath away.  My baby loves to curl up on my right side with it's back to my back (hope it doesn't stay that way for labor!) and will kick my floating ribs all day long.  I think it has started to run out of room and has centered up a little, but now the movements that kind of hurt feel almost like when you run a knuckle or fingertip through muscle.  This is probably the baby's foot or elbow and it digs in and kind of runs along the wall of my uterus and muscles - OUCH!

As for BH when I get them I probably wouldn't notice them except when I'm doing something else and notice that it's a little more difficult to pull in an entire breath (not that I'm short of breath or anything, I can just tell things are a little tighter/constricted) and then reach down and confirm that all or part of my uterus is really hard.  Another girl in my birth class said it's like having the baby's butt push out for 30 seconds or so and I guess that also explains some of the more noticeable sensations.

    hope all that helps!

  • like everyone else said, hiccups are totally normal. little A would get them all the time when she was in my belly! i thought it was totally cute and now that she is here, she still hiccups all the time!! :)

as for what BH contractions feel like.... sorry if TMI but if you have sex and then feel some tightening or cramping after the big O, that's exactly what a BH contraction feels like. it feels tight and maybe a little uncomfortable, but shouldn't be truly painful.

  • Definitely! When I get kicked hard in the ribs - OUCH!

I feel BH more as an all over cramping sensation (well all over my uterus, I mean) vs a localized feeling (which, for example, is what I would feel when I would ovulate). They're not exactly painless, but not painful either...maybe "uncomfortable" is the best word to describe them?

the pain usually only happens for a second and it's really low, like level w/ my hips or lower.

Thanks for your answers ladies. I feel better after reading them :-)

  • Hiccups are totally normal and a great sign, because he's "practice breathing."  Many babies get them 4 or more times a day.  I never really felt Libby's until last week...she's head down and dropped and I can feel the rapid movements on my cervix now.

And yes, when she moves sometimes it hurts and actually makes me feel nauseas!  If it's really bad I'll try to move her by rubbing the spot she's pushing on and usually it works.

That said, if the feelings you're having are more like an intense cramp or squeezing feeling, that is BH.  You can breathe through them or change what you're doing...walk if you're sitting, lie down if you're standing, eat, have some water, etc.  That usually makes them go away.  If they don't, then that is most likely real labor.

My BH have been kind of in one spot...a tightening across the top of my belly (above my belly button) but I have had some in the back that radiated and some deep down and low.  But most are up high.

  • I haven't felt hiccups yet, but I've also heard that they are very normal.

Recently, I do feel slight pain when he/she moves into certain spots -- like getting jammed under my rib cage or poking me in my sides, which feels like a side pain after working out.

I've had BH for a number of weeks.  For me, it's an all-over belly tightening.  My belly goes from feeling somewhat soft and compress-able to tight and hard.  I have to breathe through them... they don't hurt, but it is very noticeable, and I get a bit concerned if they last too long, so I try to relax, breathe, drink water, and they go away.

Funny the things that happen during pregnancy, huh?!

  • LOL  - Alexa used to get the hiccups ALL THE TIME in my belly. And now that she's out, she still gets them ALL THE TIME!!! I have found there was no way to make them go away when she was inside me (Duh!), but now that she's out, nursing seems to make them stop. So.... Just hold on to that tip. :-)
