Mildew smell?

I posted this over on C&O, but I thought maybe some of you ladies might be able to help as well.

My mom gave DH and I an extra dehumidifer that she had, but apparently the cap for the part you put the water in was cracked so it has been leaking a little on to the carpet.  We only had been using it for a week when we noticed the carpet was damp.

Now it's starting to smell mildewy...and tricks/tips of how to get the smell out?  I was thinking of sprinkling baking soda over the area and then vaccuming...

TIA!

Re: Mildew smell?

  • I had this problem but it was a 'wet dirty dog' smell.  I sprinkled baking soda on the carpet and let it sit for a few minutes and vacumed it up.  It took the smell right out.

Totally works!  Thanks so much!  PS:  the C&O board didn't answer my question.  Boo to them.

I'm sure regular baking soda works just fine, but I use the stuff w/ oxy clean every once in awhile and it makes my house smell fresh for days
