i work for a college as an admissions support specialist. i am not a manager, but my director of admissions has given me a lot of responsibility recently and has asked me to work with the receptionists and train/coach them on various things. i also give direction when needed and assign tasks when appropriate.
one of our receptionists has, in the last week or so, started really talking back to me, and i am trying to figure out why.
today she told me that she's halfway through her master's degree and she thinks that at this point in her life she would think she would be telling people what to do instead of being told what to do, and that she doesn't actually HAVE to work.
i was totally offended because i also often feel that i am better than the job i have, but for crying out loud! i do NOT voice that to anyone, except sometimes DH. i told her that hre commentary was inappropriate and she could keep her comments to herself. she told me that she wouldn't apologize for her comment, she was just "talking out loud"!
i also told her that our janitor has a master's degree from mexico (in accounting) and she rolled her eyes and said that mexico did not have a very high educational quality. WHAT?!?!?
she has since apologized for offending me, but i am still pretty mad.
/end rant
Re: work vent
wow, how frustrating and rude. people these days have such a lack of respect. it sucks.
at least it sounds like you handled yourself well rather than stooping to her level!
How rude. Bill Gates has no degree whatsoever. Maybe just a HS diploma. How's she like them apples!?!?!?
She needs to realize she is entitled to nothing.
As for her Mexico comment, maybe is she is so much smarter than those people who get their education in Mexico, she should go "teach" over there. Kudos to the janitor who does what he has to do to earn a living, and isn't so conceited to think he is beneath being a janitor.
I am going to put my money on the one with the Master's degree from Mexico and humility.
i wholeheartedly agree with this.
i have a high school diploma but no college degree, and i still think i am a pretty smart cookie. i tried college, but it just wasn't for me. i was smart enough to stop putting money into it instead of keep going just for the sake of a degree. i wouldn't have ended up graduating with the grades that i was getting, and i would have been in debt up to my eyeballs.
people who act entitled piss me the F off.
Just shows you that stupid people can be educated, and that intelligence and educational level are not the same thing. I have no patience for stupid people who make comments like that.
Bill Gates went to Harvard, btw- but didn't graduate.
