i finally watched My Sisters Keeper last night. right in the midst of all the sadness, my mom calls. my Papaw (who has a blood cancer called multiple myloma) was released from the hospital yesterday a little earlier than we all expected. i was hoping that was good news, but i guess they're just sending him home for a break. test results are showing more 'spots' that will need more radiation treatments and then later more chemo. it's just turning into a longer battle at this point. and i hate hearing about depression setting in for both my grandparents because of all of it. so he's home now, but a little worse than before. he has a breathing treatment machine, a walker, new meds and they said that he absolutely can not fall b/c he'll seriously hurt himself. he's so weak.
i know i need to start being a better granddaughter by just calling more to say hi or sending letters, etc... i just want to do something that makes a difference, even a little one. something uplifting for them.
Re: papaw not doing so good
I'm so sorry about your grandfather, Katie. I really hope he gets better. I'll keep him and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
That's really sweet of you to want to do something to lift his spirits. Maybe a nice card with a heartfelt letter inside of it? With grandparents, I think even just a phone call lifts the spirits... whatever you do, I'm sure he'll think it's wonderful.
Katie, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope this break will give him a little time to re-energize himself before he needs to start back w/ chemo, etc.
I know the feeling of wanted to make a difference. It's so easy to say you will call, send letters, etc but when it comes down to it, it is hard for me to accomplish those "easy" tasks! Maybe print off a few cards and have them by the door way (with stamps on the envelope) and send them out once a week. Try calling them on your way home from work so when you enter your house "life" doesn't take priority. Do they like flowers? Maybe send them a bouquet of their favorite type.
Please keep us updated!
I'm so sorry you're going through this. It sucks big time when family members start getting sick and it's hard to be uplifting when you're so upset yourself.
I made a build a bear for my grandfather when he was hospitalized. I was in my first semester in college and my mom wouldn't let me come see him as much as I wanted. So I went to build a bear and I put in a "record your own" voice box so I could tell him to get better. It was one of his favorite things in the hospital. He kept it on his bed and listened to it all the time.
