food waste, compost, what to do FU post
Ok so my earlier post about what to do with compost if you have no garden got me thinking that what I really should have asked is if there is a better way to dispose of food, etc (the stuff that could be composted) if you do not compost? I have a garbage disposal and usually just put the food down there. I do have a lawn and a yard, but no good spot to put a garden and I am not really into gardening anyway. So what can I do to be more EF with food products?

If you are not willing to compost (and I still vote for composting even if you don't garden), then putting it in the trash is the next option. Putting food in the garbage disposal is pretty much the worst thing you can do with it. Disposals are meant for little food bits that come from scraping dishes, they are not trash compactors--they lack cooling mechanisms in design, our water systems are not meant for that kind of use, and it uses excess water and electricity both in your house and at the plant. Check out this article to answer your question: http://www.grist.org/article/umbra-disposal/
What are the cons to composting for you? Maybe we can help you work through them?
It's really so easy. I'm a major slacker with it and mostly just dump stuff in with only the occasional stir, and it still comes out fine. (and I'm in the same state as you so weather is about the same)
But putting food in the trash results in a lot more trash, and then creates methane!
Even if you don't want to garden, composting is good for your lawn and all. Just dump it around the trees or under bushes once its compost.
Garbage disposals are meant for little scraps of food from dishes, not a huge pile of carrot peels or the tops of onions or whatever. You'll clog your pipes (we did with tea leaves, it wasn't pretty), the water processing plant has trouble removing the solids, and everything on your food (pesticides and food wax from stuff like apples) is now in your water supply.
What problems are you having with composting exactly? I don't understand how it can be too much work. You throw stuff in there, rough 50/50 greens and browns, stir and let sit. You can put the compost on your trees and shrubs, or offer it on freecycle. You'll get more responses than you know what to do with. Write a post with your composting issues, I'm sure we can help.
Composting is really the only option. It won't decompose in the trash because there's hundreds of feet of plastic bags underneath the one you put it in, and more coming in on top every day.
