Holy Electric Bill!

So it has simply GOT to warm up soon.  I just got our electric bill for the month and we owe almost $800!  I've never had that big of an electric bill before.  I think I'm going to throw up now....

Re: Holy Electric Bill!

  • Wow!  I work for an electric company and I've never heard of a residential bill that big (I'm sure there are some, and I'm sure there are bigger though).  Maybe you have something turned on that you don't know about?  May be time to start bundling up and turning the heat down...bust out the Snuggie!
Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • HOLY CRAP!

Our heat runs through the gas line, I think our gas bill was $200.

Did you guys have a lot of lighted Christmas decorations too?

  • We had two trees but we rarely turned them on (seriously, they were up for four weeks and we might have turned them on three times).  No other decorations.

It has been unseasonably cold here (0 to 10 degrees for the past two weeks) but we've had that kind of temperature before and haven't had that high of a bill.  Our highest one ever was $300 last year when we went through a cold spell.  We keep the house at 70 degrees on the main level and 60 on the upper level (to keep the pipes from freezing up there - our bedroom is on the main level).  I think it's time to have the propane tank filled and use the gas logs as our heat source!

  • do you think you may have a window cracked somewhere, causing heat to escape and then turn on more often?  I know people hate them but I would try to see if you have any drafty windows/doors and put those long fabric looking things by them.

  • I'll walk through and check this afternoon.  The people who owned the house before us installed the energy efficient windows (or whatever they are called, I have no clue) so they shouldn't be drafty, although I realize that doesn't mean much of anything.  I'm tempted to do what my FIL did at his apartment and cover all the windows with plastic!  haha.

  • That's crazy! One of the reasons we live in the town we do is that they have their own private electric company and it's a lot less expensive.

Yeah, that's another thing too.  Most of NM is regulated so the rates aren't ridiculous...but if you live in a degregulated area it can get really expensive.

  • Wow... I was a little miffed when I saw ours was ~$190 (it's normally ~$100-120 max.)

I'd call the company and ask if there was a mistake and request an explanation.  For it to have jumped THAT much is insane, even if the temperatures are lower than normal.  I'd also (call me crazy, but I've got a cheap neighbor) check that no one's somehow tapped into my lines anywhere!

Like Melanie suggested but a little different - there are companies (not sure if they're heating/cooling companies or what) that will come in and do energy efficiency evaluations to see where you can improve - I'd check out one of those if it's not just a mistake somewhere!

FWIW, our landlord installed those "energy efficient vinyl windows" ~4 years ago (we moved in 2.5 years ago).  They're ***.  They LOOK like they're energy efficient windows, but you can hold your hand next to the bedroom one and feel a cool draft all the time. Indifferent  Your house is fairly well built, I thought, so I doubt that's your problem, though.

  • You're going to hate me for saying this but our gas bill last month was $5.14. I was shocked it was so low!

  • LOL Kristin I was going to say I just paid ours and it was 15.29
  • HOw are your gas bills so low?  Do you have radiator heat?
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Do you have AEP?  We do and I'm so anxious to get our next bill next week because of the rate increase and it being so cold!  Ours is normally $100 a month.

But just because you have new windows doesn't mean that they insulated around them, that's where the drafts come in.  Most of your heat loss is through your attic.  We do insulation and specialize in foam insulation, the best, and it helps a lot on energy bills.  We give free estimates.  Check out our website www.investmentenergysolutionsinc.com  and you can see what we are all about.  We can also offer other suggestions to help you out!  Okay that's my advertisement for today.

  • I do have AEP Graves.

Paula: I don't think anyone can tap into our line.  Our lines run underground and the only "exposed" part is the part running to the meter on the side of the house.  We'd definitely see something coming off of that if it were there.

I checked the windows when I was home at lunch.  They are all closed up and I did feel for drafts around them and nothing was coming through.  My sister said her bill was estimated though (it had an "E" beside the meter reading) so mine may be too.  I can't see my bill at work - I get an ebill but our work computers block the ebill viewer.  I'll look at it when I get home.

  • I heard they were doing estimated readings...it's been all over the news over the past week.  They claimed the weather was too bad to go out and do readings!  So instead they estimate, really high it seems, so that you have to pay it and then they will give you a credit later.  A bunch of crap if you ask me!  I so hope the SCC doesn't approve their rate increase so they have to give us another credit.  Last time we got enough of a credit we didn't have to pay a bill for 3 months!

In the house we live in now we do, but before that we didn't and the bills were never over $30 even in the winter. Granted I have always lived in apartments so it's not like it was a whole house. But like my parents live in the next town over and they have Nstar and their bills are pretty high. My towns electric is towns name electric company, it makes a huge difference in our prices.

We have hot water heat through radiators; our bill is still ~$80-120 when we have the heat on, though (you have to heat the water before sending it to the radiators Confused.)  I'm really looking forward to having forced air in our new place, even if it will mean it's drier in the winter.

Nope we have gas (Nicor) and I have no idea why it was so low either. But I don't ask...just pay when it's so low.
