Such a sad day

Been watching the news, and my heart just breaks for all the people in Haiti, and for their loved ones. So sad.

Re: Such a sad day

  • I can't watch it, it makes my heart hurt.

  • I know. . .just saw a guy choking up on t.v. because he is unable to reach his family, he's not even sure if they are alive.

  • I know. I keep thinking about a former co-worker of mine who's Haitian. I know both her and her husband still have family there. I keep praying she wasn't there visiting when this happened, and that her family is okay.
  • I can't imagine the fear and chaos there. It is truly terrible. I know what earthquakes can do (from my engineering courses) and this happened to a nation that doesn't even have basic building codes. The amount of destruction must be overwhelming for their government. Thoughts and prayers for those families.

  • I feel the same way.  I'm donating money to Doctors Without Borders this morning.  I can't imagine all the aid organizations trying to help over there when they've lost everything.

One of my Navy friend's husband is getting ready to leave for Haiti to help.  I assume his entire ship is going, so it sounds like the US is mobilizing quickly.

  • Yes, very sad! I was watching some news reporters who said the airport was getting a lot of aid in, but no one was organizing the 'handouts' of this aid!  THAT in itself is frustrating!

What those people are going through!

That's probably one thing the Navy will do, actually.  Rather than digging through the rubble, they'll be on at the piers mobilizing supplies, etc.

I can't even imagine what those people are going through in a country that didn't really provide basic services pre-earthquake.

  • That's good to know there might be someone to distribute the items.  I can't imagine the chaos going on over there...
  • It's so awful. I cannot watch the news on it though...it breaks my heart.
  • If you have a couple extra bucks (even $5 ... everybody has that) you should consider donating. They've made it really easy for people.

Yele: you can use your cell phone to text ?Yele? to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill)

Red Cross: you can use your cell phone to text ?Haiti? to 90999, which will automatically donate $10 (also charged to your cell bill)

  • My heart breaks over this tragedy. I'm planning on making a donation to Doctor's Without Borders today . . . I couldn't help but tear up reading the paper on the subway this morning. Over 100,000 people could be dead.

I really hope they're able to start getting aid to people. So much of the infrustructure (roads, bridges, etc) has been damaged that it's hard to get supplies from the airports to the cities.

  • This is going to sound $hitty...

I really feel bad for these people. And I do thin kwe should offer some help. BUT we have people here in America that are going to bed hungry and being kicked out on to the streets in record numbers!

America is ALWAYS the first country to lend a hand and I really feel like we need to start focusing on our own, because no other countrys are going to come to our aid.

Maybe make jobs for people here who are unemployed and send them to Haiti to help. Something. But if we keep up helping out other countrys, there wont be any money here to help out our citizans.

I have mixed feelings. And I am sure its flameful.

I don't think that it's sh!tty at all, actually very true.  I really hurts my heart to see so many people that are sick with no access to medical, starving with no means of getting food and homeless with no way of getting shelter.

I know that this economy has been hard all over the country, but Metro Phoenix is one of the hardest hit areas, and it is so sad to see what is happeneing here.  It is not a matter of people being lazy and wanting handouts, there are so many people who are really trying and there is just nothing for them.  People don't seem to care as much about their neighbors that they see on a daily basis as they do about strangers half way around the world.

I do feel so badly for what happened in Haiti, but I also feel sorry for so many people here who are losing their jobs and their homes who are also starving in the streets with no access to shelter or medical.

  • It's ok to feel bad for both. I volenteer and donate to domestic charities as well, but when something so catastrophic happens, if we have the ability to help we should. It's the right thing to do. While we do have a lot of internal problems, these people have nothing right now.

I read this and cried: http://kenziekate.blogspot.com/2010/01/poor-haiti.html I can't imagine what I would do if that happened to my mom.

  • Every one is entitled to thier own opinion.

The difference between America helping them and not doing a great job domestically is this- If we lived in one of the poorest nations we would not be able to help ourselves. That is the situation they are in , so since the US can help, we should. Also many other countries are helping, it is a United Nations issue.

I can afford $10 to help, so I did.

  • Ugh.  It's just so heartbreaking and I feel so helpless.
