If you live in Hawaii (or have)

Did you ever grow a palm tree from a coconut?

I really want to grow one. I researched it. From what I found, they grow well in Hawaii and Florida, but not in other US states. It said that a coconut can fall from a tree and plant itself. The sprout pops out of one of the eyes.

I don't have a tree to drop a coconut and have it plant itself. I do think it can grow in the environment of my mom's area. It is hot and humid in New Orleans. She has other varieties of decorative palms. Oh, why couldn't they be the kind that make yummy coconuts?! I bet they are 40 years old.

If you've grown a palm... or had them plant themselves, what do you think? Is it worth trying?

Also, if anyone knows a good place that I can order the little sprouting coconuts, please post. They will be shipped to the New Orleans area. It seems like some place in Florida would be my best bet... but, I don't know a vendor or website.

Thanks for any input.

Re: If you live in Hawaii (or have)

  • I've never lived in HI, but (randomly!) Ikea was selling sprouting coconuts about a year or so ago!  We got one and it lived for about 6 months....growing to about 4 feet.  We kept it in our bathroom, which is like a greenhouse with the steam and the skylight, but eventually it died.  You could probably get one of these in a pot, then transfer it outside later?
