How do you guys decompress?

Hi ladies!

I've had a VERY stressful year (2009) and I'm having a very hard time balancing my life. I need to find an outlet to relax and nothing is working (reading isn't working, music/dancing just makes me realize how old and out of shape I am!, and watching TV is boring).

What do you guys do to release stress? Oh and I've been working out a lot (new years resolution) which is kind of adding to the stress because I have less free time now! We don't have kids yet (TTC) and I can't imagine balancing that on top of everything else!!!

Re: How do you guys decompress?

  • I usually decompress with a nice, cold alcoholic beverage, haha. Most of the things you listed that don't help are the things that usually help me (when I'm super stressed, a run always helps to clear my head..and I'm not usually a runner..) Have you tried meditation?
  • Not by watching this ABC special on Haiti, that's for sure.  So sad.

Anyhoo, do you craft at all?  I started crocheting a little over a year ago and there's something very calming about it, plus there's an amazing sense of satisfaction from creating something with your own two hands.

But...are you looking for something that won't take any time?  It's too bad that exercise isn't working for you!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • A good girls night always works great... exercising (not intense but at least working up a sweat helps make me feel more centered and accomplished)... I'm not good in the least bit at yoga but it totally helps release stress and makes me feel more centered as well.

    Mani/pedis also are awesome!

  • I'm going to second the time away with the girls. ?Also, some sort of pampering (massage, mani/pedi, etc.) ?Good luck! ?If you find any solution. ?Let me know. ?some days I could definitely use the help too.
  • being outside naturally improves my mood (at least when it's nicer out).  I like to listen to music, work out, do yoga, and read. When I used to have trouble sleeping, I would listen to CD's of the ocean, etc.

  • I watch dribble on TV. Yes it can be boring but I don't have to think at all. It's one of the only ways I can shut my brain off in a way.

Maybe try taking a long bath, have some quiet music in the background.

  • Thanks ladies! I do love scrapbooking and I always forget about it so I am going to break out the supplies this weekend and do that for a few hours.

I love working out, but for some reason it doesn't de-stress me. Weird because I know it's supposed to! I'm taking a spin class tomorrow morning with a friend so maybe that'll help!

  • It can be so hard to try to relax when you are super stressed out.  At my previous job I was so stressed out all the time that I never was able to find a way to relax.  Now I cook, go to the gym, get outside or talk to my best friend...all of those help.

    This would stress me out!

  • The gym helps me.  I also make sure to reserve the hour before I go to bed to completely zone out...no computer or iphone.  I watch something mindless on TV or read.
  • Taking ballet class always helps me relax because I don't think about anything else- try a yoga or pilates class maybe if working out at the gym isn't helping. For me going to the gym is kind of mindless so it doesn't really help me relax- I just get bored! I also try to take at least 30 minutes before bed to just read- it doesn't always happen when I'm swamped with school work but it really does help when I can do it.
  • Mindless tv, a pedicure, yoga (I do flow yoga so there's not much time in between poses for my mind to wonder), dinner with a girl friend or two, and def some wine!
  • That's too bad working out doesn't help destress you! It helps me a lot.

But mostly I just knit, knit, knit, all the time. And I mean ALL the time. And I read a lot- I read more when I've had a lousy day. And I cook.
