Lancaster nesties...

So we are thinking of possibly building a home in Elizabethtown, halfway between my job in Lancaster and DH's in Harrisburg.  I don't know much about Etown and just wondering if anyone has experience with the area, especially the schools.  Is Etown SD a good district?  I'm also a little worried that we will be far removed from all the creature comforts like restaurants, stores, etc. that I have gotten used to living in Harrisburg!  TIA for all of your advice (again!)

Re: Lancaster nesties...

  • Etown is a beautiful area IMO and from what I have heard the schools are pretty good. I have a friend that works for the schools and she loves the district.

  • I graduated from Elizabethtown College many years ago and loved the area.  I still felt close to Lancaster and Harrisburg but enjoyed the small town feel, even as a college student.  I don't know much about E-town SD because I only did some volunteer work in the district, no real placements.  And again, it was over 10 years ago so I'm sure things changed.

  • Here are Etown's SAT scores for 2006,

    Reading :501

    Math:520

    Writing:490

Total 1511 (They are higher than the PA averages, and similar to the Lancaster County averages).

also- I know a family who really likes Hershey school district- it's a little more expensive to live there though (there are more stores and restaurants)

  • E-town is great! it's got a great small town feel, great local restaurants!! you are 15=20 minutes from Lancaster shopping and also Hershey area.  I grew up in Manheim, not far from e-town.  E-town has always had a great reputation for their schools and sports.  I have a few friends who teach in the district not growing up there and love it.  It's not a huge district which is nice, hershey is.  you're also far enough away from the city influence.  good luck!!
  • I grew up in Etown and went to public schools. I think it's a pretty good school district - I feel I got a great education and there are good sports and extracurricular programs.  I loved the town...it is about 20-25 minutes from shopping in Lancaster or Hburg...I like being in Mt. Joy which is a closer to Lancaster (the next town over) but we will most likely move back to Etown. There is such great support for parents of young ones in the community!
