help me choose

Gawd I'm posting a lot tonight. I need to get a hobby or something. Embarrassed

Anyway, here's what I think is the final nursery design (that's right, I've FINALLY MADE A DECISION lol). My question is about the mobiles...I can't really find anything affordable that I like, so I've come up with two DIY options. I keep going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth on these...

Option #1 - circles (clicky for larger image)

image

Details: To be made out of chipboard ovals and spray painted. These would be the cheaper option at about $10 a mobile. I like that they kind of repeat the circles from the bedding and the sleekness of the design. (This $150 mobile was my inspiration.)

Option #2 - pirate stuff (clicky for larger image)

Details: also to be made out of (pre-cut) chipboard shapes and spray painted. These would be the slightly more expensive option at around $20 per mobile (so not breaking the budget, if you prefer these). I think this is cute, but I hesitate a little at going beyond the wall decal with the whole pirate theme. My MIL is already shopping for these kids, and she LOOOOOVES themed stuff - so I'm nervous that if we go with this option, we'll end up with a big ole pile of piratey crap that we'll neither want nor use. (I hope that doesn't sound ungrateful...but you know what I mean, right? I like the stuff that we choose, but she and I have very different tastes and since she'd be over fairly regularly I couldn't just shove it all in a closet...)

[Poll]

Re: help me choose

  • I like option #1 Lisa...I cannot get the poll to work.
  • Here's the secret Lisa. You get one of those cheapy plastic tubs big enough to fit all MIL's 'lovely gifts' and shove it away when she's not around and then uh oh she'll be here in 10 minutes...grab the tub and walk around the nursery dispersing items accordingly. My mom is out of control when it comes to my kids. Which it really is awesome to have grandparents to spoil them but come on how many dress up dresses do 2 little girls need? Well according to my mother it's 27! No, not kidding. And like you, she and I do NOT share the same taste at all. So plastic tubs are my bff!
  • I also like the way #1 echoes the circles on the bedding.  I'm sure your little pirates will end up will all kinds of other pirate stuff -- no need to go overboard.  (And I PROMISE I wasn't trying to make a pun there...it just came out that way).  :)
  • I really love the pirates, but I voted for #1.  Since you might only use the mobile for 5 months or so, I'd go with the more economical option (x2!), especially since the circles coordinate so well with the bedding.  I can't believe you found an easy and cheap way to DIY.  Awesome!

  • I do really like the pirate stuff, but I completely understand about not wanting to go overboard with the theme, so I voted for #1....it's very cute, too!

  • Hi Lisa - I voted for #1 but keep in mind that the babies won't care if the mobile matches the sheets...my suggestion is that you make them colors that they can see easily...black and white at first and then primary colors.  Varying heights are good too.

You may not be looking for a musical mobile since you'll have two in one room (although when my twin bro and sis were born and in the same room, they each had a musical mobile that didn't seem to bother the other one), but we have the Symphony-In-Motion mobile and SP still uses it at 15-months...the mobile part detaches leaving behind the music part (on ours, it's Mozart, Beethoven and Bach...SP prefers Mozart, he will reset it when it progresses to Beethoven, it's hilarious).  Anyhoo, you may get ideas for from looking at these, they are great developmental tools with their many colors and black/white paterns.

Either way though, really cute ideas.  Good luck!

  • It looks like #1 is winning! The ovals for it are currently on sale at a scrapbooking store online, so I might go ahead and order them. Thanks, ladies! Yes

This cracks me up! I think I'll need a system like this. When I saw MIL a couple of days ago, she had a Target catalogue and was flipping through the baby section and pointing out all this stuff that she wanted to buy to me. And some of it was useful, but other stuff...well, let's just say I wouldn't have picked it out! I tried to subtly steer her in the direction of things that we'd use more, but I don't know if it sunk in or not. Stick out tongue Like you said, it's awesome that someone wants to spoil them, but at the same time it can get out of control lol!

Nice advice! Off to check out the link now...

  • I like them both!  I ended up voting for #1, but maybe with a couple less rows/columns?  They just seem a little big in the mock-up but I know it's probably not completely true to size.

Yeah, they'd probably be a bit smaller than they look in the mockup...everything is kinda vaguely to scale, but not really, if that makes sense lol.

  • I like both, but voted for #2 because I thought the design looks really cute and I like how it matches the pirate ship on the wall too. I think even if you went with circles, your MIL might get pirate stuff anyway because you have the theme on the wall, so I didn't really take into consideration the MIL going overboard with pirate stuff...but that was just my thought when I had to ultimately vote for one =P
