Name change q - SIN card

I know I've seen people mention here that you don't have to change your name on your SIN card.

The other day, I emailed my administrator at my employer and she reminded me to change my SIN card as well.

So... do I need to do this? Does my employer's record of my SIN card need to match their other records? What if I'm applying for another job in the future... does my given name need to match the name on my SIN card?

Re: Name change q - SIN card

  • Technically, you are SUPPOSED to change your SIN card.  I never did though - and I"ve been married for almost 7 years.  I've never had a problem, but I haven't switched jobs.
  • I changed mine... It was pretty easy to do if you go during regular business hours... I had no wait and it didn't cost anything. It arrived in the mail a couple weeks later. I wanted it for the future when joining a new company so it's not confusing. gl!
  • I haven't changed mine and I have switched jobs since getting married (and changing my name on everything else), started up new RRSP's and have also applied for EI (mat leave). I have had zero issues.
  • I do plan on changing my eventually though.
  • Hey, that's funny I just changed mine today.  I can't really tell you how it will affect future jobs and such, but it was very easy and fast.

It seems like from what everyone has said that it doesn't seem to make a difference either way.

  • I changed mine, it was super easy and I did not have to pay for it either, I think it was one of the only things we did not have to pay for to have my name changed.

  • It's super easy to change. Just go to a service canada office and show your marriage certificate and SIN and they change it for you and within 5 days you get your card.

I changed mine and no charge for it either. I know it's a long long long time away from retiring but it will effect your pension if it's different than all your other documents.

  • Just make sure you bring your birth certificate or other primary documentation with you.  I went with just my marriage certificate and SIN and they wouldn't do it.

Funny enough my mom's is still in her maiden name and is not affecting the pension she is collecting. I bet it is one of those hit and miss things that it affects some and not others (like everything else government related it seems).

I agree with you on that one Jen. Where I work a lady had to change some of her documents because it didn't match her SIN card. She was in like her 80's. So sometimes they catch it sometimes they don't.

  • I haven't changed mine.  I also just started a new job last month and no one said anything.  I've also applied for EI (Mat leave) with my maiden name on it.

  • I changed everything all at once.  I figured I had to run all over town for the driver's license, health card, bank accounts, etc, that I might as well make a day of it.

  • I changed my SIN card when I was changing everything else. It was probably the biggest PITA though - only place I had to pay for parking, longest wait, stupid questions asked more than once (what's your father's middle name, mother's maiden name).
  • I've never had a problem. I only changed my name on my driver's license and at the bank.
