changing b/c to fit into your schedule

i'm planning a beach vacation in July of 2010. i've counted out the days of my period on a calendar and discovered that i will have it during the week of my vaca. I was told by a friend that i could delay taking the pill after my next period, do some math, and wait 2 or so weeks to start it again so that i will get it a week or 2 after i would've originally. i would change it now, january/february so that i could plan it and have it be effective still. has anyone ever tried or heard of this?

Re: changing b/c to fit into your schedule

  • I don't do this often, but I start the new pack, instead of taking the inactive pills. It will cause you to skip your period this month.

  • yeah i thought about that too, my perscription is up in 2 months and i have to go back to the gyno to get in renewed...im not sure if i should wait the 2 months and ask her about it or do it, and tell her and have her be mad at me
  • This happened to me when I was planning my wedding...I realized that my period would fall right during the wedding and honeymoon so I decided to skip the placebo pills and start a new pack, well that backfired..sinced it was the first time I had done that my body did not have time to get used to it and instead of not having a period, it lasted nine days! All the way through the honeymoon!! If you want to do this..start now and get your body accustomed to the change.

Ugh, this! I tried this once, a few weeks after our wedding. I skipped my period and spotted the next three weeks instead. Sexy. =(

I would do it again though, if it meant not having my period on vacation.

  • if i do it 6 months in advance, i should be able to get over all the side effects before the vacation....? it should give me enough time to adapt
  • When I've had this issue, I just take start the next pack after the last week of active pills to skip my period just for that one month where it interferes with a vacation or other event.  There is a chance you may have breakthrough bleeding though.  I never had, but it is very possible.  I guess you could do what your friend suggested, I've just never heard of it before.
  • You mentioned your doc being mad at you for skipping your off pills? Why would he/she be mad at you? My MIL is an OB/GYN and she recommended I do this for our wedding. You may spot, though, but if you tell her what you plan on doing she can prescribe you estrogen pills that will stop the spotting. Your best bet is just to ask your doctor what he/she recommends and go with that. But I highly doubt a doc would be mad at you for something like that. The "period" you have on bc isn't "real" anyway, it's not like you ovulated. Skip your off pills, you'll be fine.

This. Every doctor I've ever had has said that skipping the placebos and going straight to the next pack is totally fine to do as long as you're not doing it all the time.

  • The way that you manipulate your period on the pill is by skipping your placebos and starting a new pack immediately. DON'T just stop taking your pills for 2 weeks - that's an incredibly stupid idea that will really throw your body out of whack.

Oh, definitely! Sorry if I was unclear. If you skip the placebos, say, this month, you might get some breakthrough bleeding just until your next period.

I agree with pp though, waiting 2 weeks to start the next pack is a bad idea.

  • I've done this a few times and not had too many problems.  I would do it on your next batch of pills.  I did that recently so I wouldn't have AF during Christmas.  This month's is wreaking havoc on me.  I started a little early and actually had cramps this time.  Just a small price to pay to enjoy my first Christmas with DH.
  • I dont know if you're interested in changing your bc but there is a type of bc out there where you only get your period every 3 months. I love it! It's different for everyone of course but its called Seasonique if you're interested
  • I had to do this before. Call your doctor. You can probably talk to the nurse and she will help you figure it out for your exact BC
  • Ditto PPs about just skipping the inactive pills for that month and starting a new pack.  I did this for our honeymoon and it worked perfectly.  It's so much easier than trying to readjust your entire BC schedule.
