Burt and Ernie, how could you?

I was watching Sesame Street with Dex the other morning and Burt and Ernies Adventures came on. In the opener, Ernie jumps into bed with Burt (directly behind him) and the song goes, " Whenever the bed starts tapping something special is going to happen" . They put on cowboy hats and I swear Burt says, "this is kinda kinky".

WTF?!

Re: Burt and Ernie, how could you?

  • I think I heard it too!!!!  WOW!  If you hadn't pointed it out I wouldn't have even caught it.
  • LOL He totally says Kinky! I can't believe that... Collin will never watch Burt and Ernie...
  • LOL Kinky is all I can hear too.  I keep trying to think if it's something else, but I even turned it up loud and kinky is all I hear.
  • i can't even bring myself to watch...
  • that is totally what he said....that is effed up!!!!
  • ugh how gross! i am just absolutely disgusted with how morals in this country have just gone out the window. why cant people just allow children that innocence we all had when we were that age? my middle school students know more about sex and drugs and stuff like that then i know now and now it seems as though by the time i have a toddler i will be answering questions about the birds and the bees - geez!
  • According to the comments on the video, Bert is saying "that's kicky", apparently a catch phrase he's been using for years. I did thought he said kinky, but it doesn't sound quite right. I definitely did a "wth did he say?!" when I watched it.

The only reason we're stunned by it is because our minds aren't innocent anymore. I doubt their target audience are going to give it a second thought, or even ask about the dirty things we're interpreting it as. Growing up, I never questioned Bert & Ernie, Mr. Rogers or any other kid show that watching now I would get dirty vibes from. But it's all up to your mind and interpretation. Kids aren't going to know what isn't put into their minds in the first place. I really, really doubt there was any sick meaning behind it to expose kids to any sexual implications.

Really, when you're a kid, you just enjoy the show. You haven't been exposed yet to anything to make you think it's anything more than just characters being themselves. If the parents throw a fit because they don't find it appropriate, that's when the kids are going to learn "hidden meanings". There's really nothing wrong with that segment, from a child's POV.

  • i heard it too!  that is so messed up!
  • lol...I heard "kicky". But it's funny if you read more into it.

Nothing wrong with a little same gender platonic love ;)

  • Kicky doesn't make any sense. I know it's all innocent to a child. I think it's hilarious.
