My friend is getting married in March and most of the stuff on her registries is all bought up already. I believe that they have been given some money for their HM and have also saved some money for it themselves (they're going on a week-long cruise). I was thinking of giving them a gift card/on-board credit that they can use while they're on their cruise, and I also e.mailed a few of our friends to see if anybody else wanted to go in on it with us. Well it turns out that most of the friends that I e.mailed are interested. With each of us contributing around $100 or so, the amount of the gift certificate could wind up being $500-600.
I'm wary of giving them more money than they can realistically use on the trip. Does a $500-600 gift certificate sound like too much to use on one cruise, since they've already been saving some money for the trip? Or does it sound nice, since they could then use that money for something else? (I could suggest to my friends that we "divide and conquer," with 2-3 of us going in on the cruise gift certificate and the others joining forces on some other gift.)
Re: WDYT re: wedding gift
I think it's a GREAT idea. Our booze, purchases on the boat and excursions totalled to $600 - so basically you guys could pay for them to not to have to worry about what excursions to do or how much to drink!
You guys are NICE.
Definitely not. When we used to go on cruises, my bar bill alone was close to $200. Drinks are expensive! They could also use the money for excursions which can cost anywhere from $90-$300 a person. There is also duty free shopping on board. That money will go quickly.
I think this is a great gift! What a wonderful and thoughtful idea. I am sure it will go to good use!
This is true. They can use their money for whatever they want too. I guess if you give them the GC for just the cruise then they will feel like their HM is more like a gift and they will be more willing to splurge and treat themselves while they're on the cruise. I know when I treat myself with a GC I feel less guilty than when it's my own money. Even if I've set the money aside for that specific purpose.
My mind just always goes to the visa card because sometimes if I give someone a location specific GC I think they might not need that much money for that occasion. But then again they could use the visa card on gas or something boring like that and who wants to buy gas with a wedding gift?
I'm sure they'll appreciate it however you give it.
I think this is great, but my only concern is if they will have to prepay for any excursions. I've never been a cruise so I have no idea how it works. But I'd hate for them to have already forked over a bunch of money for excursions and then get your gift in addition. Then they might have a hard time spending that much money in addition to what they have already purchased. Is there a way to figure out if they need to pay ahead of time? And if so, could you maybe give it to them a bit early?
