olympus stylus tough 8000
Hey ladies, I thought maybe you could help me out. DH and I are thinking about getting this camera. We really like that it can go underwater and seems like it could take a beating. Does anyone have or know anyone that has this camera? If so what do you think about it? If not maybe you have a good rec. for a waterproof digital camera.

I don't have this exact model, but I have an older version of it. I've had it for going on four years now, and I'm really happy with it. For point-and-shoot, I think the picture quality is good. It does get pretty grainy if you slow down the ISO, so it's not great for taking shots in low light without a flash...but what point and shoot is?
The model I have is shockproof up to 5 ft., and waterproof up to 10 ft. I can vouch for the shockproof, as I'm clumsy and have dropped it several times. It's still working great. I've never tested out the waterproof, but I love the feature because I don't worry about bringing it out to the pool, or on the lake. I will warn you though that while it's waterproof, it does not float. So if you're going to be in deep water with it, they make a little life preserver type strap that you might want to invest in.

I wouldn't recommend it. I don't own it personally, but I am a photographer and read numerous camera reviews. The Panasonic TS1 is a good "all around" tough camera and for underwater only, the Canon Powershot D10 is highly recommended. DPReview did a comparison test of these cameras along with the Olympus Tough 8000 that you can read here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q209waterproofgroup/
On the DPReview site, user reviews, and other professional reviews, the Olympus Tough 8000 is always touted as having very poor image quality.
