FI and I normally do our own taxes, but this year we're going to need to hire an accountant to do them....we bought a house together but aren't married yet, I work three jobs (one of which is Tribal and tax-exempt), I got a federal grant to pay back student loans, etc etc etc. So I just don't feel comfortable doing our own taxes this year.
Does anyone have any good suggestions for picking an accountant? Do I just randomly select one from the phone book? Are there certain certifications that I should make sure they have?
Re: Taxes?
Word of mouth is usually a pretty good source--ask around to friends & family.
Yes, you can randomly select from the phonebook/web etc.
I highly suggest CPA-Certified Public Accountant.
This. Word of mouth is best. Although, we do get a lot of random people off the street every year. You might want to check with your financial planners as well. My boss is a CFP and does taxes as well...does just as good a job as the CPA who rents an office from us but is less expensive and takes less time to do them. Of course the CPA still does everything by paper and pencil...he's a dork. hahaha.
