Favorite Hawaiian island?

What's your favorite island in Hawaii?  We're thinking about going there and I haven't a clue about the islands so it's hard to narrow a search.

 TIA

Re: Favorite Hawaiian island?

  • I've only ever been to Oahu and the reason we picked that one was because it had the most wedding resources. It was amazing and I loved it. However, I don't think we'll go back to that island for awhile just because there's so many great things on the others. I really want to visit the Big Island and Kauai. I'm not so much interested in Maui b/c it seems like that's where everyone and their sister goes. We always like to be off the beaten path a little.

My aunt & uncle went to the Big Island a couple years ago and loved it. My uncle talked about it the whole time we were in Hawaii. I really would love to go and see the volcano and the black sand beaches (I've actually already found a rental house even though we're not planning a trip there anytime soon...lol) From what I can gather it's the island to go to for the more adventurist tourist.

Kauai I want to visit because it looks so amazingly beautiful. It's so lush and has incredible waterfalls and rain forests. I know there's the wild chickens but the people I've talked to that have been there didn't have a problem with them.

Maui I think is more of the resort island. I'm sure there's someone here that has been there and can give you more info than I would be able to.

GL w/ the planning! We can't wait to go again!

  • Maui Maui Maui Maui...

We were married on Maui - love every inch of that island.  It is definitely a more relaxed island.  We went to Oahu for our Honeymoon - it is just as beautiful... more touristy and more stuff to do.  Every island is pretty different - so it depends on what kind of vacation you want to take!

I am jealous that you are even thinking about going... I would give ANYTHING to go back right now!

  • if you want a vacation where you just lay by the beach and do nothing, kauai is the place!  it does not have much to do, but relax and see the amazing views!  look at my FB album called honeymoon.  it is all our pictures from kauai!

  • Decisions, decisions.  Everything you've said sounds great.  We're hoping for a relaxing vacation, less on the touristy side.  Also needs to be baby-friendly as our LO will be in tow.

Looks like I've got a lot of research ahead of me.

Kauai looks amazing!  I love the pictures of the view from your hike (start at #71).

  • Big Island!  Kona side.  :)  My Godparents live there so I have a free place to stay and they give us a car while there, too.  So that's one big perk.  But BI also has the BEST snorkeling!  I was never a huge fan of snorkeling until I went there and I fell in love.  We also drove down to the Volcano area which is really neat.  And of course the coffee is fantastic.
  • Kauai is gorgeous!  very lush and not touristy at all.  we rented a condo at Kaha Lani, so it was family friendly!
  • I used to live on Oahu and find myself going there most often because I know people there.  But my favorite island is kauai.  I agree that each island is different and the key is to find the island that fits your personality the best.

I have to agree with Jaye here.  I LOVE the big island!  We stayed in Kona but we did things all over the island.  We went to the rainforests, the volcanos, the black beaches, we also drove around the entire island one day and it was just amazing how different the island is.  My parents have been to 2 other islands (the one with Honolulu and I'm not sure of the other one) and they still recommend the big island. You should check out Hawaii's tourism website.  I was thinking about getting married there and they give you tons of info on the different islands for what you are looking for.  Have a great time!

  • We went to Maui and Kauai on our honeymoon. Kauai is much more laid back and relaxing if that is what you are looking for. We stayed at the Hyatt on both islands...The Hyatt in Kauai had a TON of children there and had great resources for you with the kiddie!!
