bitter sweet

my parents are closing their business of 15 years. i was shocked when they called me last night. the last 2 years have been a real struggle with the local economy and timing was right. Dad got offered a great job that he sounds really enthusiastic about and much more financial security for them. and he actually said, maybe it'll lead to a transfer opportunity to warmer climate (closer to us!) one day down the road. we'd always talked about that, but knew it was impossible with the business.

Re: bitter sweet

  • Wow, that's a big decision. Hopefully it will all work out and they can be closer to you.
  • Oh Katie, that is bittersweet.  What kind of business did your parents own?  I hope that your dad will enjoy his new job and your parents will move closer to you soon!

  • I hope that it all works out for them!
  • That is bittersweet.  My dad owns his own business too, and I've been worried about him lately too  :(  I hope everything works out for your parents!

  • I'm glad he positive about the future...I imagine he'll miss a lot of aspects of business owning in the beginning though
  • he owns a car mechanic shop in Ohio. i really think it'll be a good move. the business was just dragging them down - emotionally and a little financially too. hoping they come out on top with closing it down and pay off some of that debt.
  • Oh Katie--that is such a bittersweet thing for you all.  On the one hand, I'm glad that he's optimistic about his new opportunity, but I can understand how you all must feel about closing down his business at the same time.  However, if that could lead to a transfer down here, then it sounds like an overall good thing for your family!
  • I bet that's going to be a huge change!  I hope it's a smooth transition for him and the decision proves to be a good one.
  • I'm very sorry Katie. My parents had to close thier business of 27 years just 3 years ago. (I was working for them at the time). It was really rough. I'm glad your dad is very optimisitc about the future and I hope it all works out for the best! GL.
