POLL: Need Advice- Travel

I am going to my cousins wedding next month in San Antonio and I am looking at airfare and the prices are ridiculous.  I am just doing a Fri-Sun trip so I can save my time off for baby but the tickets are $350.  I was wanting to do the name your own price on priceline to save some money, but I need to be there by ~4.

WWYD??? TIA

Re: POLL: Need Advice- Travel

  • If you have to be there by a certain time of day, I'd definitely recommend paying full price.  The lower fares are usually offered because you have a long layover, or the flight is at an odd time (very early or very late... like red-eye late!).

Of those three options, two of them could make you late... not the greatest odds.  And once you pay, you're stuck with what you get unless you call the airline to pay a $150 change fee, PLUS the difference for the higher fare.

  • I would always rather pay full price and get the best times for me.  It may cost a little more, my my sanity is worth even more than that!  I can't stand being stressed out and being in a hurry to get somewhere.

  • What is the deal with San Antonio?!  We tried to fly stand-by to go visit B's friend and couldn't get on a flight because they were all full.  Then when we looked in to buying tickets to go another time, they were super expensive, too!  There must be something great going on there, huh?

If you really need to be there at a certain time, definitely don't chance it.  That said, I've never used Priceline so I don't know much about it.

Yes Agree. If your times are flexible (like if you're flying in a day or two in advance) then I might say to give Priceline a try, but otherwise if you have to be there by a certain time on a certain day, I'd go for the certainty.

  • As others have said, if I had to be somewhere by a certain time, I wouldn't risk it.  I'd be too stressed out and rushed... it wouldn't be worth the savings for me, especially if the event was important enough for me to be taking the trip in the first place.

And you can hack away at that extra $100 by making small sacrifices during travel -- taking a carry-on instead of checking bags, packing fruits and snack bars instead of buying breakfasts/snacks, etc.  GL!

  • I'd suck it up and pay the extra $100 to book a regular ticket.  You might get lucky with your bid on Priceline but meh, maybe because I'm a pessimist, if it were me, I'd be telling myself that there's no way that'll ever happen.  Since you don't have much flexibility and need to get there by a certain time, I think the $100 extra would be worth it.

  • thanks I knew I needed to go with the higher priced one, but I am so frugle that it kills my sole to pay full price for things expecially trying to get ready for baby :(  I have checked the prices almost everyday and they are still the same price.  I will just have to suck it up:(
  • Also, I am pretty sure that when you bid on priceline for airfare they are allowed to add in a stop. So if you want non-stop this is pretty important. AND you dont accrue airline miles on priceline.
