Re: What do you think about this?

  • maybe this will work:

This article here. Which talks about Caribbean's decision to continue docking at Haiti for R&R, in which they site their reasoning as being that their passengers will bring much needed economic stimulus by shopping at the local markets while docked there.

    I disagree.

  • Wow. I don't know exactly how to feel.
  • I feel like I need to know more about the area they're stopping at.  If it's:

    A) safe (i.e., no looting or crumbling buildings)

    and

    B) if there are no "bodies in the streets," (the article suggests that might be the case)

    and

    C) Businesses are still up and running,

Then yes, I am in favor of the cruise bringing the economic benefit of tourists into the area and dropping off supplies.

  • Honestly, from an economic point of view, it's probably very good for Haiti. Their economy has all but disappeared, so anyone spending money anywhere in the country is good. The article says it is on the Northern Coast, which is pretty far from the Port-au-Prince area, so I imagine there is little to no damage to the area. Especially considering the ships are also dropping off supplies, and if they are taking appropriate safety precautions for their passengers, I think it is fine.

I would not be surprised if they stopped using that port over the next few weeks though, as refugees from the Port-au-Prince region are going to be spreading out around the country which will cause instability on local economies and infrastructure, and it will probably become a more dangerous area.

  • This is the thing.  Even before the earthquake, Haiti was a mess: substandard living conditions, violence/crime, extreme poverty (I've been there, I know first hand.).

People saying, "It's in bad taste," are saying that because they think the rich are flaunting their wealth and having good times, basically slapping the poor in the face.  Well, if that's the case, Labadee (and the few other PoC) should never have even existed because, again, Haiti has always been a mess.  That's crap.

Yes, RCI is making the right decision: tourists are contributing to the economy and aid/supplies are being delivered.  In addition, money is being donated.

    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • I totally agree with munkii and couldn't have written it any better.
