A vent about Haiti (I'm a horrible person)
I feel horrible for what happened in Haiti, I really do. But with everything going on with asking for donations, commercials during football games, "fundraising" (for lack of a better term) during the news, asking about it at the Golden Globes...it just makes me angry and sad to think about all of the people here, in our very own country, who need help, too.
And I'm going to he!!.

I'll be joining you. I think it's horrible and I feel horrible. I can't even imagine something like that. It just kills me that it takes a tragedy to make the world come together, well a tradedy that is not expected.
It also makes me so sad because there is consistant tragedy around the world and in our own country and no one unites. They only unite when it's a natural distaster. No uniting against human trafficking, geneocide etc, unless it's the fad thing to donate to. A general uniting of our world to create a better place for our future generations is all that we need.
***steps off soap box***
The fundraising business here in the US raised over $306 billion dollars in 2007. Yes - that's billions. While obviously some of this goes to charities that do work overseas as well as here in the US, Red Cross, Doctors without Borders, etc. the vast majority of this money stays here in the US. Yes, when these huge diasters hit it can feel like people care more about helping others overseas but the truth is we give way more to help our fellow citizens day to day.
I think you don't see the impact the same since it's spread out throughout the year and it comes is the form of thousands of different campaigns for tens of thousands of different charities.
But think about it - I might send $10 or $20 to help Haiti but there are several times a year I sponsor people in fundraising walks, buy tickets to galas, or give in memory of someone. I bet this holds true for a lot of other people, making our state side impact much greater than what we give overseas.

Haha! You're not a bad person. I keep seeing all these stars giving millions of dollars and I selfishly agree, I'd rather see that money stay "close to home".
<<ducks from flame darts>> I think the same thing about animal charities- the money would better be used on children or disease research.
For me, I think it's a difference in scope. First, I think there's enough money for everyone to donate to causes in the US and around the world. My giving to charities based in the US is much higher than what I gave to Partners in Health, an organization who is working in Haiti right now. The money I gave to them isn't money that I would have given another organization, so it's not like I'm taking away money from a cause in the US.
While we have problems here in our country, they are nowhere near as severe as they are down in Haiti right now. People are starving to death or dying from infections that can be easily treated. People are having limbs amputated with only local anesthesia, if any at all. Thousands upon thousands of people have died, there are many orphans. Haiti is an extremely poor country, and if people around the world didn't help, it would be a colossal disaster.
Ditto olivia_eve. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, if those of us with disposable income don't donate to try to help, then who will? They certainly can't help themselves right now.
I do agree, though, that seeing celebrities who make millions of dollars badgering me to donate to their pet charities rubs me the wrong way.
I don't think you're going to hell, but it's certainly not the most compassionate point of view.
I don't like to compare tragedies and human suffering, but the US hasn't had a disaster on this scale. Yes, people go hungry in this nation. But, we are one of the most powerful and wealthiest countries in the world, so why this happens is a mystery to me. But I really don't think it's a lack of money. On the other hand, Haiti doesn't have anything.
Extreme human suffering is extreme human suffering! Just because they are not American does not bother me and I just don't get people who feel differently.
That was b*tch, in case there's any doubt.
