in september when i saw SIL i gave her a bunch of my homemade cards.
they had everything from birthdays to sympothy cards to everything in
between. well, her friend came over and SIL was showing them off to
her. well, she really liked them a lot and told me i did a wonderful
job. i over heard her say at one point that she had an etsy store.
well,
the other day i remember that and wanted to see what she sold. while i
was looking i saw several cards that where just like mine!!! same
stickers and sayings!
now, i would not care if she asked me if
she could use my idea. i would of said yes and not think anything of
it, but she didn't. now she is making a profit off of my idea. my ideas were original, and while i understand i didn't patent them it
is unethical to rip off peoples ideas and pass them off as your own. WWYD?

Re: would this bother you?
That's pretty low on her part! I don't know what I would say to her since she's you SIL's friend, but I would feel like I needed to say something. Maybe something passive aggressive like "I noticed you used some of my designs, how are they selling?" just to let her know that you are aware that she's ripping off your ideas. Then I would make sure she doesn't see anymore of your work. Hopefully someone will have better advice than that....GL!
ETA: I forgot to say...yes, it would bother the eff out of me
This! I would be pissed.
That's awful! I would be pissed!
This! I would be so ticked off!
Hell to being passive aggressive!
I'd ask SIL if she noticed her friend copied your designs by saying, 'oh, I had no idea __ had a paper goods shop until I stumbled across my own designs on etsy- did she happen to mention to you she was using my designs as influences? because if she wants to continue to do so I'd happily sell her my designs for a fee if she'd like to market them.
Better yet, I'd write this letter to the the girl in question under her feedback!
Briefly: Yes, it would bother me. She is pathethic.
I think Etsy is such a double edged sword. It is full of handmade crafts and wonderful ideas that certainly could be duplicated at home. Its also a great way to make money from a hobby you really enjoy. In your case, making cards. Unfortunately, every time someone puts an idea out there, on Etsy, or even in a blog or on a board like the Nest, you are taking the risk that you are going to get copied. WITHOUT credit. Just lurk on some of the boards and you will see it over and over again. I agree with the pps that it STINKS and its really sad when people have to copy original ideas as there own.
There was a similar discussion last week on NDB about the difference between "inspiring" and "coping" (you can read it here) And most everyone agreed that if you see something that you love and want to make yourself it is okay to use that inspiration. But when you claim the idea as your own, fail to credit the original source, and/or try to SELL it as your own, you have crossed a major line.
The girl in question may feel like since you told her where you got your supplies, etc, she is entitled to do the same thing as you, down to the last detail, and then sell them. Maybe she thinks that since its a big world, no one will notice. Maybe she thinks that no one in her 'real life' circle will realize these came from someone else idea/store/blog/post. Maybe she doesn't care as long as she gets the credit and the cash.
You could certainly take the time to report her. The most that will happen is that she will get banned and then just come back with a new store name. It isn't fair, becasue I'm sure you want credit for your designs/ideas, and you rightly deserve it. Its a shame becasue the next time you have a great idea/source/product you will probably be very hesitant to share it with others, for fear of being copied without credit yet again.
I am really sorry this happened to you. Your cards are great and I love getting them.
I completely agree with Renee. Especially about coping vs. inspiration. I have seen it on the boards over and over again. In the corporate world this crap would not be tolerated. I love looking at the crafts board especially now that I have a sewing machine, but I will only be making projects for myself. I agree copying an idea for profit crosses a major line.
(((hugs))) Marelina! We'll kick her butt for you! And anyone else's that continue to rip off other people's ideas.

thank you ladies! i would not care if she just asked. the fact that she did this and did not think i would find out bothers me. did she not think SIL would not see her store?! SIL was pissed by the way.
i love your idea Dex! i'm going to write her a "lovely" letter. thank goodness SIL has my back on this one.
funny how just a few simple words would of not made this an issue!!!
