Re: Leno's Side of the Story
I can respect him for speaking out and I am more sympathetic to hear he was forced into retirement, but I still don't totally agree with his side of the story.
The part of his story when he said the execs told him to come back to 1130, and he claims he asked "would that be OK with Conan" and they said "oh yeah of course" sounds fishy. Do you really just take that at face value? It doesn't sound like he was tough to convince.
He is. It's definitely too little too late IMO.
He couldn't have truly thought that Conan would be OK with him taking the 11:30 slot, I just think he didn't anticiapte the amount of backash and the out-pouring of Conan love so now he's all like "hey! the network screwed me toooo!!"
Without having read this article... DH found the clip from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 2004 when he announced that his "retirement" from late night would be coming in 2009. He said Conan would take over and he was fine with everything. He even said something like "I'll almost be 60 in 2009, it'll be time to retire!"
Either he was lying then or he's lying now. Either way he sucks and I'll never watch a show of his again. I'm with CoCo and I hope he gets a HUGE severence package!
