XP: Need Advice re: pain

I pulled something in my neck and I am in excrutiating pain. It is comparable to the pain I had after my c/s, and I had an abdominal sheath hematoma with that. I am having repeated muscle spasms that make me gasp out loud.

The dr said the muscle is inflammed and hard as a rock. She gave me Valium and told me to use a heating pad as much as possible. I took 2 Valium and it maybe decreased the pain by 10%. I can't even lie down or get up without DH helping me.

Should I be asking for something else? I cannot do any normal activities with this pain...I can't even pick up Marino.

I can't take NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) b/c I have colitis.

Re: XP: Need Advice re: pain

  • Can you try alternate medicine like acupuncture?  When I tweaked my back last year and could not sit at work (all I could do was stand or lie down), I saw an acupucturist.  I mean, the pain would make me gasp and double over; after my first appt I had some relief and definite relief after the third visit.  Good luck!
  • I would check out a chiropractor.

Best thing to ever happen to me when I tweaked my neck a few months back.

Definitely this.  Try to find one that has a traction machine...it feels SO good.  I had a situation similar to yours and the traction really worked to free things up.  Also adjustments.  And ask if your chiro has a massage therapist...that should help a lot too.

I would also recommend alternating with heat and ice.  You probably pulled a muscle and/or pinched a nerve.  Poor thing!  Hang in there!

  • Oh, Sara, that sucks!!!  I third the chiropractor - I couldn't live without one!  Hope you feel better ASAP!
  • What about something like a muscle relaxer. I am by no means a drug expert, I just know this is what they gave my brother when the side of his back was doing something similar to what you are describing. He said the pain medication didn't work for him either. It made him feel a little hazy and took lessened the pain for 15 minutes, then nothing. I hope you feel better soon. I know you hate being down for the count, esp. with Marino still being his usual energetic self.
  • Nothing new to add except feel better and call your Dr. in the morning and tell them it's not working.
  • Ack!  I have no advice, just wanted to say sorry, that sounds aweful :(

  • Ouch. My belief about pain is that it is our bodies way of telling us not to do something. If you take a pill that makes you less aware of the pain you are risking more damage.

I don't know what to make of doctors who treat pain with pain killers or anxiety meds. Sure, they have their place... but, shouldn't something else be done to address the cause of the problem?

From what you are describing, the pain sounds severe. What is causing it? How do you find out? Do you need something like an MRI?

I'm interested in some of the solutions pps suggested. First, I would see if a dr can determine the cause (some test?). Next, I would find out what non-drug treatments are available, acupuncture and chiro.

I don't know what muscle relaxers do... although it sounds like relaxing the muscle would reduce the pain if it is a muscle pulling on something. What if it is a nerve? Do they help with that? Maybe research that as a third step.

  • Acupuncture! My aunt had a brain tumor back in '91 and she's been using acupuncture ever since to help her cope with the chronic pain.

My husband takes aleve for his back pain - it's supposed to be a muscle relaxant, but I have no idea what the ingredients are.
