I am so out of shape!

I started working out a few weeks ago. We bought a treadmill, bike and weight bench for the basement - which is nice b/c in our new town, there are no gyms. Holy heck, I am so sore. It's like all the abuse I've been putting my body through has caught up to me. I swear that every muscle, every joint is sore. DH calls it a "good hurt", it makes me want to punch him in the mouth. Everything hurts...everything. I know I will get past this but, good lord, this sucks!

Re: I am so out of shape!

  • I love it when it hurts the next morning (that's what she said). It lets me know that I worked out hard!

And then I take a bubble bath :)

  • Ice!  It's your friend when you work out hard.

The bath feels better while you're in it, but in the long run makes it worse.

  • I feel your pain.
  • I love having that pain in my abs after a workout, but not my legs because then I find it harder to work out again for a few days.

Kmap - why does having a bath after make it worse?

  • For me having a bath the same night makes it worse, the next night however it is like heaven.
  • (disclaimer, it's been a long time since biology so the following has been simplified for my benefit)

Working out brings blood to your muscles, blood/lactic acid is what makes them sore due to inflammation.  If you heat the area more blood rushes to it making it worse.  Ice reduces the inflammation.  The harder the workout the more amplified this would be.

Also the best thing you can do after a really hard work out is use the muscles the next day.  So if you've really worked your legs go for a walk, on the eliptical, swim - something low impact.  The elliptical helps with upper body work outs too.

  • I totally know what you mean. My FI always says it's a good hurt, and usually ends up with a glare. I have wrist issues, so whenever I workout, I always ice my wrist after. It works wonders. For the super sore muscles, try that.
