Poll: the dress

My dress is still hanging in my closet and I'm trying to decide what to do with it... Has anyone made any decisions and followed through with them yet?

Re: Poll: the dress

  • Mine's boxed. I'm keeping it.
  • I'm definitely keeping it.  It's still hanging in it's case in the closet and haven't decided if I'm going to get it cleaned and preserved, but probably not.  It only got a little bit dirty around the edges (which I can't believe since we were outside for ceremony, reception and trash the dress) so I should probably start looking for a good box to fold it up in with some tissue like some people have mentioned.
  • I think I'm donating it to Brides Against Breast Cancer (http://www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/). My dad is the most sentimental about it for some reason :). It is hanging at my parents house right now, my mom is just waiting for the word to send it out...I keep hanging on to the idea that I might want to do a TTD session, but our photog lives in NYC, we live in DC, and my dress is in VT so...we'll see if we can get around to it before my dress taking up so much space pushes my mom over the edge!
  • I haven't touched it since the day after the wedding! Some of the organdy overlay tore when I was taking it off, so before I do anything with it, I'm going to have to get that fixed, in addition to getting it cleaned. I am also thinking about donating it to BABC, though I know they are picky about what they take. If that doesn't work out, I'll probably try to sell it.

  • Mine has been sent off for cleaning. I kinda wish I had TTD pics done, but I had boudoir pics done instead.

  • Mine (as expected) was pretty battered after a night in Vegas. I posted it on Freecycle, and it ended up going to a group of actors who do some sort of holiday fair. Really cool! I just couldn't see saving it when we have so little space right now, and it didn't hold much sentimental value. My blue shoes I will keep forever though!
  • Still hanging in the closet.  The thought of giving it away or selling it makes me sad but what further use will I get out of it?  IDK what to do.  It needs cleaned regardless, though.

  • Mine is still in the closet at my parents house. I plan on keeping it, I don't know why but its just so hard to let it go! It needs to be cleaned but I am still holding out hope that I will get to do TTD photos or "day after" photos since I hated my wedding pictures so much.
  • Mine's still hanging in my parents' closet.  I intend to keep it, which means we should probably get it cleaned and preserved soon, but, like pp's, I'm still clinging to the hope that we'll do a TTD session.  Although if that's the case, we should probably do it before we move, which is looking like it'll happen in the next couple of months.

  • I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who didn't get their dress cleaned yet! I actually just looked into pricing yesterday because i got a nice commission check, so that will be done soon. I do plan on keeping mine. My sister wore my mom's wedding dress 20 years later, so it is possible that one day my daughter will want to wear it. If not, I will have the ring bearer pillow or something like that made from it's fabric. I love the material and the subtle beading... and I just absolutely can't part with it! I'm such a sucker for things like that. It comes from losing every memento from the house I grew up in when my father died. The house was emptied and sold so I have very little to remind me of him and my childhood. So now I hang on to EVERYTHING.

  • Mine's hanging in the closet... I kind of like looking at it every day. :)  I'm eventually going to have it cleaned and preserved but it's so expensive!  From what I've found where I live, it's going to be $200-$300!  We definitely don't have the cash right now.

I live in a pretty large city so I may give it to my mom to have it cleaned in her little po-dunk town.  I think it would be cheaper.  Or, someone posted once about an online service that ships you a box to ship it to them in... something like that... and it seemed cheaper than local dry cleaners.  If my mom's town is expensive too, I may try that.

  • Mine is still hanging in my closet, waiting to be cleaned. I'm not interested in doing a TTD, I'm just lazy. Embarrassed

I'll probably end up preserving it, I think I'm a little too sentimental to donate it

  • Mine us also hanging in the closet.  Well, on the door of the closet in the guestroom.....I need to get mine cleaned/preserved.  I just don't want to pay for it right now....
  • Mine is sooo dirty... and it is still hanging in my spare closet in the bag.  Need to get some $$ saved to take it to get cleaned and preserved.

  • I sent mine away to get cleaned and preserved and it's now in a box in our closet (well technically in my MIL's closet since we live in a little condo).  It cost about $150 but I think it came out really nicely.  I hope that if we're lucky enough to have a daughter or daughter in law that I can make a hankie or a pillow or garter or something out of it...

  • Mine is hanging at my parents place. I'm planning on keeping it forever. Heck, I might even wear it again since it's not your typical dress!

  • My friend is getting married in October and we are having a TTD shoot after her wedding then I will get it cleaned and preserved. I was going to have it cleaned at the end of last year, but as I was getting it all ready to bring to my seamstress I just busted out crying and had to put it back on lol. I told her it was too soon and that I'd do it another time!

  • Mine is hanging in the closet, still dirty from the wedding and a TTD shoot. I just don't have the extra money to have it cleaned, and I'm still holding out  hope that my TTD photographer will feel generous and will want to do another shoot in another season. He keeps talking about doing one in the snow.

I think I'll keep it and may have a christening gown made from it for future babies...  we'll see when the time comes.
