Hawaii Nesties
Dear Community,
Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.
If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.
Thank you.
Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.
MH and I want to donate a little something for those affected by the Haiti earthquake. (We're bad, I know we're a little behind the curve.) We want to make sure it's to a charity that has low operating expenses and that most of the monies go to the actual cause. I found a site that grades some of these charities (www.charitynavigator.org) but now my head is swimming in mass amounts of info.
Can you recommend a reputable one that you like and has an easy donation process? Like one that could take money from a CC? I don't keep checks anymore and I don't like the idea of giving cash.
Thank you

I think the red cross or UNICEF are both safe bets.
My boss has always had a soft spot for Haiti & has donated to this organization for years. She knew the priest that formed it & always trusted him/the org. http://whatiffoundation.org/
One of the ladies on the Book Club board has an ex-marine friend who self-deployed with some other guys to help out in Haiti.
Ordinarily I wouldn't recommed donating to random people, but since it's a fellow Nestie's rec., I would say they are reliable and via the blog you'd know exactly where your money went. If you're interested, a link to the team's blog is below!

ETA: Adding the text from her post (nestie Young_Love):
A good friend of a good friend is an ex-marine who grouped up with other ex-marines and just headed out to Haiti to start working. They financed this trip on their own, mostly on credit cards.
If you have a second, read what they've been up to over there and spread the word if you can. Their credit cards will only last so long, and they are doing so much good work over there. They are working totally on their own, so any money donated to them will go DIRECTLY to keeping them there and helping.

We gave to Doctors Without Borders. I LOVE them. Giving was really easy -- there's a "Donate Now" button on their website.

Here too!!
I just wish they could get some of the medical supplies in sooner. Sounds like a chaotic mess and the basic medical supplies are having issues making it to the doctors there.
As I've started earning more money, one of the things that has given me the most pleasure is being able to donate more to Doctors Without Borders. They are a truly wonderful organization, no fuss, no muss, no lavish expenditures, and they perform an extremely useful, much needed service around the world. I truly feel my dollars are being used 100% efficiently by them, and I only wish I was a millionaire so I could give them more!
I second this.
