Recommendations? Dishwasher Soap & Deodorant.

I've never posted on this board, though I have checked it out from time to time for info.

We've been failing miserably in finding a good, environmentally friendly dishwasher detergent.

So far we've tried ECover, BioKleen and CitraDish.  They all left build-up.  And CitraDish was an absolute nightmare.  It didn't even clean the dishes.  I had to rewash all of 'em by hand.

Can anyone suggestion an alternative?

Also - I'm trying to make the switch to a 'green' deodorant.  Which ones do you like?

Re: Recommendations? Dishwasher Soap & Deodorant.

  • We use 7th Generation dishwasher powder with vinegar as the rinse aid.  It has worked better than anything we'd used before, including non-EF brands.

As far as deoderant goes, I've been using The Crystal and while it works well if I"m doing nothing, it totally failed during a trip to Disneyland on a cool day.  With the summers we have here (over 100 everyday) I obviously cannot rely on this brand.  I'm not sure what to try next...

  • We also use vinegar in the rinse.  I normally use Method Smarty Dish tabs, but my H bought 7th Generation tabs last time and they are working well for us too.

  • As for deoderant..I have been using Kiss My Face Liquid Rock for about 2 weeks now, and it seems to work well. Not 100% great like a "regular" deoderant, but pretty darn good and much MUCH greener than "regular" stuff!

  • We use 7th Generation liquid + 7th Generation Rinse Aid...they work better than the ol' Cascade.

I have like every EF deodorant out there.  I used Crystal today, and I think I smell.  Sad

  • We use 7th generation liquid, but we only fill the holder about 1/3 of the way, plus white vinegar as a rinse aid.

I've tried every natural deoderant out there.  KMF, Jason's, Tom's, Alba, and I think a few more.  I use the Crystal now and it works just fine for normal days.  For really hot or important days, like job interviews, I use Dove.

  • One thing I've realized with dishawsher detergent is to only fill the holder 1/3-1/2 way full...I talked to someone who sells dishwashers and they said that the majority of people use WAY too much soap and it ends up leaving scum all over the dishes.

The best I've found for us (and we have semi hard water) is the trader joe's line of powdered detergent...I've tried a lot of other EF detergents with not much luck.

I use the crystal as well for deodorant but am looking into making my own soon!

  • Thanks for all the suggestions.  Never thought to try vinegar in the dishwasher (I use it religiously for cleaning and laundry).  I'll give that shot as well.
