American Wife

Have any of you ladies read it? I have been trying to read it for like 2 months now and just can't finish it. I will read it in between finishing another book, read a little bit of it and lose interest. I'm one of those that has to finish a book when I start one.

Re: American Wife

  • I really enjoyed it, I think because I kept picturing George and Laura Bush as the characters. Once I heard that (allegedly) the characters were based on them, I found I could really start to enjoy it. I can absolutely see how someone might not like it though. The "wife" seems to drift through life a little.

  • Really? Hmm...the Raleigh book club read it last year & I think most of the girls liked it. I know I did. in fact, I liked it way more than I thought I was gonna.
  • I really liked it too Alethea!  I'm pretty sure it is based on Laura Bush, but in reading it, I remember forgetting it was about them and being really into the story.  Good luck finishing it~ I'm the same way, I hate to have an unfinished book!
  • I listened to the audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Sorry you aren't really getting in to it!

  • I really enjoyed it. I think I read the whole thing in about 2 days. I also like to finish books once I start reading them, but reading is supposed to be fun--so if you're not enjoying it, move on!
  • i read this with the raleigh bookclub. I found the end loooong. i thought it really could have ended about 100 pages before it did. i did enjoy it though and it kept me wondering how much of it was actually taken from the Bush's lives and what was complete fiction.

I totally agree that the final portion of the book really dragged for me. It didn't seem like much happened and I liked the character less.

  • Well I really like the first half of it and then I got kind of bored with it after they got married.
