anyone flown from NC to Hawaii?

when?

where did you fly out of and into?

do you remember how much?

DH and I took a peak at prices and I've never spent this much on a flight before. I have no clue what a 'good deal' is on flying from here to Hawaii. we'd love to go visit our friends in October (5 days at their house, 5 days at a resort). They live in Oahu (HNL airport).

Re: anyone flown from NC to Hawaii?

  • We did, we did!! Last November...Except we flew to Maui. Our original itinerary was Charlotte to Dallas, then Dallas straight to Maui. Last April or May, we booked the trip and scored tickets for $450 EACH, we were psyched. We scheduled our flight a week after the wedding. Well, a few days after the wedding I got really, really sick with what I truly believed was swine flu, I was way too ill to get on the plane and go, so we pushed it back a week, the airlines charged us $600 EACH to do this, which sucked. Sad Our new itinerary was Charlotte to Dallas, Dallas to LA, LA to Maui.
  • ok, so $450 seemed like a deal for you? that's sounding pretty good compared to $600 - $800 which is what I was seeing last night. i need to sign up for a fare watcher probably
  • I did in May 2008 - tickets were around $550 - which according to my friend who I was going with (her family lives in Hawaii) was very good (she goes at least once a year).  We flew on Northwest - on the way there we flew from RDU to Minneapolis and then to Honolulu.  On the way back we flew from Honolulu, to Seattle, to minneapolis, to RDU (ahh).  She likes to fly out there really early in the morning and fly back through the night from Honolulu - just another random travel tip!

Oh - and we flew out on a Sunday and came back on a Tuesday - I'm guessing playing around with what days you leave and come back will help the price too!

Have fun - Oahu is beautiful - I would love to go back with DH sometime soon.  (I tell my friend she should get married there!)

  • we did last spring for our honeymoon - we went from raleigh to atlanta, atlanta to la and la to kauai.  on the way home, we were leaving from maui so we went maui to seattle to atlanta to raleigh.

i know one of the airlines now has a direct flight to one of the islands from charlotte. i would look into that if it's an option.  it would definitely be a loooooong flight but worth it IMO with no connections/layovers and the chance to miss a flight, etc.

i can't speak for price since my FIL paid for our tickets as a wedding gift, but when i was looking at flights to tell him which ones we wanted, the prices were around $1000 at first, then dropped to around $800 pp.  $450 seems like an awesome price, and $600 - $800 seems about average.  good luck, it is BEAUTIFUL out there!

  • Yeah, $450 was dirt cheap to us, and right around the time we booked, CNN came out with an article about how Hawaii's tourism industry had taken a nosedive because of the economy, and how now is the time to go because airfares and hotels are so cheap, etc. I think we bought right when the economy really bottomed out. The article said in '07 it was like $1000 per ticket to fly to Hawaii. I think if you could get a ticket for $500-$600 each right now, that'd be real good.
  • It peeves me off that we got such a steal on the tickets but in the end wound up paying $1,050 per ticket because I got sick Sad  Next time we are getting trip insurance!
  • We are planning on going in May, and some of the prices are scary.  Our wedding is in Phoenix, and we found that it might actually be cheaper to fly from Maui to Phoenix, stay for a day, and then fly from Phoenix to RDU. You might be able to do the same for maybe LA or San Fransisco.

  • Chiming in (I normally post on the travel board) -

We flew from RDU to Maui in spring 2008 for our honeymoon. We flew American, RDU - Dallas - Maui, coach, $700/ticket.

US Airways flies nonstop from CLT to Honolulu. Since this service is pretty new, they may be running some specials?

  • Also -- we want to go back to Maui on our 3 year anniversary. But we've decided that we'll fly through LA and stay a day or 2 to break up the trip. It was a looong flight, 8 hours, longer than I realized. Longer than it takes to get to Europe!
  • I flew from RDU to Maui July of '07. (Wow, can't believe it was that long ago!). I had a layover in Salt Lake City. I flew Delta and my ticket was a little over $800. Also, it was last minute and I didn't spend a whole lot of time searching fares, I was invited to go in late April & bought my ticket in May, just 6 or 7 weeks before leaving.
  • Yes, for our HM in 2004.  We flew out of RDU.  Our tickets were $900 each.....but that included inter-island flights because we went to 2 islands.

  • We went to Maui for our honeymoon.  From Charlotte, connected in Dallas, then to Maui.  About $500pp.
