Travel agent or book yourself?

I think we have discussed this before, but I don't remember!

We want to go away in April, someplace warm! We are thinking of cruises, Orlando/Disney, or maybe even Mexico. We need someplace kid friendly!

Should I book it myself through the various websites out there, or go our usual route of Liberty Travel? I am sure there are pros and cons to both, we want a good deal but obviously don't want to screw up!

Which do you use and/or recommend?

Re: Travel agent or book yourself?

  • I just booked a trip to Ireland not that long ago and I shopped around a lot online and talked to a few agents.  I ended up booking the trip through AAA.
  • There are definitely pros and cons.

The pros are that you have a professional doing all the research for you and that they have a lot more info at their fingertips then you do.

The con is that sometimes you do wind up paying more when using a service because you are paying for that convenience.

You may want to check out Southwest.  They actually have vacation packages that you can book on there - I did a Disney one for a guy at work.  Expedia also has packages.

I do all the travel arrangements for my office.  My suggestion would be to do a little searching yourself and find a few options and then do some price comparisons.  After you have a few ideas give a travel agent a call and see if they can get you a better deal.  If you have AAA they also have travel services which might give you discounts as a AAA member.  When DH books our cruises he has done it both by himself and with an agent depending on what type of deal they can find.

Now, the only bad thing about cruises, and this is something you would want to check on, is that they can charge full price for a child - even a baby.  We did a family cruise on Carnival and they charged full price for our six month old nephew.  I think Royal Caribbean charges over age 2, but I may be completely wrong on that.

Sorry for the book - hopefully this helps a little!

  • I have always booked bigger trips (cruise, resort stuff) through a travel agent. When we went on our babymoon cruise last year I was ready to book online (I thought I found a really great deal), I called the agent we use just to see what price she could get. It was over $100 cheaper pp, we got a free room upgrade, and she got us a great deal on the flights.

It doesn't hurt to call around to some travel agents and compare what you find online. I am not in roch, but we use Liberty and have always been happy.

We booked our 1st cruise through AAA, and was glad to have the advice on room selection, port stops, etc.

We booked our 2nd cruise (and probably any future ones) on our own, directly through the cruise line, because they had the best price.

AAA info was great, but a word of caution if you book flights through them. They did NOT let us know about  a flight change and we missed our connection on our HM (the time had moved up 1.5hours) We seriously almost missed a night at Couples Swept Away because of those jerks. Thank goodness for Delta that got us booked on a different airline. I guess it's our fault partially- we didn't bother confirming flights because we used a travel agent. Lesson learned.

  • We book all of our land and sea vacations through our TA (she's great and gets some good deals/perks!) and we book the airfare ourselves if the price is right.

  • I think you do have to pay for a baby on a cruise.  That is why when we were goig to do a vacation this summer we decided against a cruise.
