woohoo! I finished our taxes.

I *know* I shouldn't be excited that I let the gov't sit on our money (again) this year, but I really love refunds!

I guess we should try to figure out a better withholding since this will be the second year of a pretty big refund but I get so nervous about owing.

Re: woohoo! I finished our taxes.

  • Good for you!! You're so ahead of the game :-).

I hear ya about getting a better withholding. We have the same issue. We sat down with a financial planner last week and she was surprised to know how much refund we got last year and suggested that we adjust our witholding. However, DH is also scared about owing!! A couple of year's ago, he almost had a heart attack when our accountant told him he owed $20K. Good thing it was actually a mistake (she didn't know it was primary home or something) so he didn't have to pay the gov't anything. Whew!

oh my gosh - 20k?!  I would have fainted!  Good thing it was a mistake!

We should really sit down with someone to determine a better withholding, but I'm not sure it would be helpful yet b/c DH has been at his current job less than a year and his income is dependent on how busy he is.  His boss gives him lots of cases, but now that he has been in the community for awhile he is pulling in his own cases and getting lots of referrals from other attny friends so I think we should wait a while to see what happens.  hmmmm.

  • Wow, already!?! We haven't even gotten all of our tax documents yet to do taxes with! It's incredible that you're already done! I wish we were done too!

  • Awesome! I love being ahead of the game too. I did ours I think last week and we got our refund today! Yay! We also got a huge refund...maybe we should be doing something different just in case this crappy economy lingers. Wouldn't want to get an IOU instead of a refund. But it's nice when you see those figures in your account all at once!

Yeah, I hear ya. DH likes getting a big fat refund at the end of the year. He feels it kinda forces us to save on top of what we save each month. If you think about it, having a savings account only gives you 1% interest? I agree that it doesn't make sense in giving Uncle Sam an interest free loan. We're in the process of reassessing our finances. We will probably change our withholding such that we will still get refunds but not an enormous amount. We got a sermon from the financial planner how we can use that money for something else like start a college fund or something which is true :-/.

  • Ooooh this reminds me, I need to do mine! One of the things that blows about being an American is that the USA is the only country that forces their citizens to pay taxes on income you earn overseas, so every year I have to file a USA tax return AND an Aussie one. On the upside, you can simultaneously file to get your taxes waived if you earn less than...I think it's $150k?...which I do, so I don't actually have to pay anything to Uncle Sam - but it's annoying all the same to have to do it!

Really? Where is that? Not snarking, genuinely curious since even a basic savings account at ING has over 4% interest.

  • yay for refunds!

I can't wait to get our W2s so I can start.  With a new baby this year, I guess I'll have alot of things to figure out!

  • Good for you!  I started gathering everything yesterday (DH is self-employed).

Yeah interest rates are horrible these days.  We have a credit union account that gave us a hefty 4% last year, but it was recently reduced to 3.5%. From what we hear, that rate's still a rarity, too.

TD Ameritrade sends us special alerts when they have good deals... our latest was a CD yielding 1.75% or something and it required a $25K minimum.

Def keep your 4% account if you've got it!!!

Wow! I knew interest rates had dropped but I didn't realize they were that low! That really sucks!

Lisa, when I opened my ING savings account a few years ago, the interest rate was high (can't remember the exact rate but probably over 3%) but they don't offer that anymore.Their interest rate now is 1.25%.
