f/u to IUD Question

So I was reading through the responses to the IUD question listed below, thanks to whomever posted that since I've been needing to post the same question, and noticed that a few women mentioned strings and checking the strings, and I'm hoping that someone can elaborate on this/shed some light on what you all are talking about. . . .Thanks!

Re: f/u to IUD Question

  • I did my research. Strings attach to the IUD and it's to check if it is in place. And that is how they remove the device...

  • The strings are tricky. Some doctors keep them long, some cut them short upon insertion, so make sure they show you how to check for them while you're there.  Also, sometimes the strings curl up or along the side, and they aren't as easy to feel, so not feeling the strings is not an immediate sign of expulsion. I learned this the hard way after a few panicked moments.. lol
  • The string is no big deal. When I first had my inserted my husband said he could feel the sting, but now it's curled so he rarely rarely feels it. My doctor actually told me that the more I check it the more likely it will come out because you can accidentally pull on it.

  • I posted a diagram in the original thread.

  • Yes, they attach to the IUD and that is how it is removed. You can not see the strings nor feel them (as in they are not hanging out like a tampon string). and I can assure you my DH has never ever felt them. Actually, my OB/GYN told me specifically NOT to check the strings because if accidentally tugged right after insertion can dislodge the IUD.

  • My DH felt them a couple times at first, but now he never does. My doctor also said there is no reason to check the strings. He actually couldn't even find the strings during my last visit, but he wasn't worried.
