emotional night

My parents have been talking for a while now about moving somewhere in the middle of my sister and I...since they now are both retired. Right now they are 3 1/2 hours from me (Buffalo) and 2 1/2 from her (Rochester). So they put an offer in on a house earlier this week and just found out that they got it! I'm so happy for them and feel they are so deserving, but I'm just so sad. It's more than them just leaving behind a the house I grew up in, it's my hometown, and all of the people there. I grew up in a really small town where everyone knows everyone. I love going home....I'm just an emotional basket case over this, tearing up as I write this and DH thinks I'm crazy and that I need to "get over it".  I  feel silly even being upset about this and should be so happy and thankful that they will be even closer to us and be able to see us more and do more things with us...it's definitely a bitter sweet thing. :/

Re: emotional night

  • Well there is nothing saying you can't still go visit your old home-town.  Sounds like it is close enough to hit up on the weekend once in a while.  I think it will just take some time for it all to sink in.  Plus, it will be nice to have your parents so close by.  Just let it take some time.  :o)

  • Aww. I'm so glad that they are moving closer to you.. Thats wonderful! but I can see how you are sad about them leaving where you grew up. I would definitely be sad about my parents moving out of the house i grew up in.. it always feels like "home".. I wouldn't be that sad about my hometown.. but I don't really like it that much. :)

  • I think your feelings are completely normal and more common than you think. Especially seeing that you have a little one. Changes like this can be very emotional and you need to take a bit of time to "mourn" your loss so to speak.
  • I would feel the same way!  As wonderful as it will be to have them closer, it is a major change and it will take time to adjust to it.

  • It's definitely bittersweet, but it's great to know your family will be closer. It was definitely a milestone in my adult life when the family home got sold and my parents left town. My bff from elementary school still lives in the same town, so I do get back a couple of times a year to see her.
