I am really sick of being on the pill, I have been on it for like 11 years. I don't know exactly what it is, I am just tired of it. I was wondering about switching to a diaphram but I was looking for other peoples opinions of them. My husband and I are not ready to start trying for a baby yet but we hope to this summer. So being off the pill ahead of time would be nice too. I think I am still going to try the diaphram, but if you have an opinion of it you'd like to share, I'd be interested to hear about it
Thanks!
Re: Diaphrams??
I just went off the BCP a month ago, and while DH and I were discussing diff. birth control methods, this came up. I however, never had heard of anyone using a diaphram, so it made me be like "no, i don't want to use that". We're just hoping that good 'ol Trojan holds up until we're ready for kiddos!
If you do go through with it though, I'd be interested in how it goes!
This. My OBGYN office doesn't have the stuff needed to fit for one in the office anymore, they would have to special order the stuff.
My friend (who uses the same office that I do) asked about one, and the OBGYN laughed. Diaphrams are viewed as pretty obsolete as far as birth control goes, and he couldn't remember the last time anyone even requested one.
Why not just use condoms and spermicide if you're that gung-ho on quitting BCP?
Good to know! I haven't had any kidlets yet, but my mom (and both grandmothers) was quite the fertile murtle so I'm pretty much terrified of using other BC methods.
I have a diaphragm. I don't use it anymore bc I eventually discovered I couldn't actually get preg without IVF, so I can't speak to its effectiveness. But it was easy and hormone-free.
My OBGYN just ordered it and I tried it on for fit and that was it -- it wasn't a big deal at all. She admitted not many use it, but it was great for us!
I did not use spermicide -- I can't remember what I used though. This prob brought its effectiveness down even more, but I was (and still am) in a monogamous relationship and if we got preg by accident, that would have been ok...kwim?
I'd talk to your doctor about other options. Diaphragms are not only hard to find now, but they're also known to be messy and their effectiveness is as low as 86%.
Do some research and the talk to your doctor about what interests you so that he/she can help you come to a decision.

I use a diaphragm. Doctor literally laughed in my face when I asked him for one. Then he made me watch one of those scrolling picture films from 1973. It was like a time warp.
The only thing "fitting" means is doc putting the sample one in for you. They have 3 sizes & give small to those women who have not ever conceived.
We use it with the film spermicide - which ups the effectiveness to condom level. It takes someone with loads of willpower and self-determination; having to plan sex all the time or stop-put it in-wait 15 minutes. *If you want to know what it feels like before getting one: get one of those menstrual cups like Instead and wear it for a while (not for sex). It's pretty much the same thing but all polyeurathane. Also, if you order it, make sure you call your insurance before you get it at the pharmacy. It's considered a medical device so you might have to go to a specialty med-device pharmacy under insurance's list. I went to Walgreens and had to pay $100. Fail.
FWIW, doc also said, "Hey, that's more business for me!" (Re: if I get pregnant).
PM me if you have any more questions!
Same here! My older sis and I were both conceived via diaphragm as well!
