Taxes...ick

Hi ladies,

Was just wondering what route you are all taking with your taxes having only been married in the month of December.  Because we were all legally married by December 31st, I understand we must file married, but will you file separately or jointly?  I think we are going to file jointly, which I read within TaxCut that most couples choose to do.

 Thoughts?

Re: Taxes...ick

  • We're filing jointly. I have never filed taxes before so I don't know much more than that. Good thing the hubs is good at tax stuff!
  • I have no idea. Neither of us know how to do it, so we'll probably just go with whichever option is easier. :o)  Does it benefit you to file jointly?
  • It seems to definitely benefit to file jointly.  I did it both ways, and when I did it separately, we actually OWED money.  But when I did it jointly, it calculated we would get a pretty decent return.
  • I believe that we'll be doing it jointly. We haven't really discussed it too much yet.

T has been supporting me financially since August, but prior to that my grandfather was. Normally, due to my grandfather's generosity, I let him claim me and I don't claim myself, thus my returns are always super shiiity. (like, $50, max.)

However, my grandfather is now helping my brother through school, and my mom gets zero benefits for claiming him since he's over 18, and he doesn't work so he can't claim himself, thus my grandfather shouldn't be affected by not claiming me and letting us do a joint return.

I hate taxes. I hope that we get a great return. We could certainly use the money.
