Does anyone self insure? (health care)

DH's company offers insurance, but it's through the roof and we're convinced we can find something better.

What company do you use? How do you feel about the coverage you receive?

TIA

Re: Does anyone self insure? (health care)

  • Mine is through my work, but I work in health care and a lot people that buy their own health insurance get Wellpath.

  • DH had a pretty comprehensive plan through Blue Cross/Blue Shield for around $160/month. His coverage was just as good as mine (80/20 plan & pretty good prescription coverage), but I think they raised the monthly rates $10-15 within the one year that he had the policy. I don't know how much those increases were related to across the board increases or if they were related to DH's use of the policy.
  • my job reimburses us for HI... I just switched from a Blue Advantage plan ($144 a month) to an HSA ($137 a month)

And I am pretty sure EVERYONES rates went up with BCBS... we all got letters at our office

  • The reason I was thinking it could have been related to his use was I'm pretty sure he got rate increases on two seperate occasions during his one year of use. Maybe it was just the way the year hit? He got his policy in November, I think he got a rate increase in Jan (which we figured was due to the new year) and then again in July or something.
  • Thanks for the info.

I went to BCBS online and did their general quote and it was outrageous. Not really any better than DH's company. I imagine talking to an actual representative would get a beter price.

His company won't reimburse us, but they will suplement which is why we want to look into our own policy. Their prices are based on the average age of the insured employee which is somewhere around 55.

FWIW, when I was self-insured, the rate I got from my rep was about 1/2 what the website said it was supposed to cost.  Similar to Terp, though, I did get 2 increases during my year and a half with BCBS, but they were still small enough increases to stay with them.

That's interesting, b/c I'm 99% sure DH got his policy online. I wonder what rate he could have gotten if he had talked to someone.

  • Have you looked at Assurant? When I needed short-term, they were significantly more affordable than BCBS.
