where have you bought carpet?

even if you are not from buffalo. Have you ever bought from home depot or lowes? we need new carpet in our family room(it is light tan berber and i hate it and it shows everything) and our living room soon to be playroom.

Re: where have you bought carpet?

  • Try GCO next to Raymour and Flanigan on Walden Ave.  DH and I priced Home Depot and Lowes...along with many others....and GCO was the cheapest.  They even sell the remnants if you can find one in your size that you like- so cheap!!  When we went in there we told him that our friend recommended that we go there- he gave us a discount.  Their installation was pretty cheap too....I think we paid $80 for 1 room.  It's worth a shot.
  • We bought the carpet for Eva's room from Home Depot.  It was reasonably priced and the installers did a good job.  It's the only experience I've ever had buying carpet though so I have nothing to compare it to.  My mother, in Buffalo, gets all her carpet from Markarian Rugs on Delaware across from the Mount.  They are pricier but have awesome customer service.

  • We just re-carpeted our entire second floor last month.  After looking at carpet companies, Lowe's, and Home Depot, we choose Home Depot.  Here is why -

    1) they had 0% interest for 1 year (Lowe's was only 6 months) and even though we plan to pay off the carpet with our tax rebate it was still nice to know we had one year.

    2) we got a 10% off coupon from the post office (HD and Lowe's will take each other's coupons so this could have gone either way)

    3) We asked sales associates at two HDs and two Lowe's to work up quotes for us.  The HD quotes were the same but the Lowe's quotes were different.  Each person we spoke to at Lowe's gave us different answers.

    4) Lowe's had a few more 'hidden' fees than HD.

This was our experience with our local stores so your's may be much different.  I will tell you though that by moving all the furniture and ripping out the old carpet ourselves we saved about $900.  So just realize that you don't have to buy their entire package.  Wherever you go make sure to have them break down the separate costs for: carpet, carpet pad, ripping up of carpet, removal of old carpet, labor, moving furniture, stairs w/ no spindles, and stairs w/ spindles.

    HTHs!

  • We recarpeted our new home this fall before we moved in. We needed something in stock (instead of special order). We wanted to use HD but they didn't have a style we liked. We ended up going with Lowe's. Love the carpet, HATE the process.

They said that they need to come out and measure, scheduled between 6-8pm. Guy calls at 7 and says he's over an hour away. Shows up at 8:45. Then we get the estimate, everything is fine and we pay. Big banner says guaranteed install within 48 hours of any in stock carpet. Install is 48 hours from pay date. It was on Sunday, Monday was Labor day, so Tuesday and Wednesday were 48 hours. Got a call Tuesday asking how the following Monday was for us. We were moving in that weekend so we needed the 48 hours. Told the guy absoutely not and he WILL find a way to get us installed. (side bar: we had been told that scheduling installation was a breeze, including after hours since DH and I work 8-5)

So guy calls another woman who agress to switch so we get her Wednesday mid day spot. I had to leave work for hours for this to happen. Then afterwards I got a service call, "how was the installation?" I let them have it.

Note: obviously this has to do with their subcontractors and each Lowe's is different. We used the one in Big Flats, outside of Elmira. But for my experience, I will never patronize Lowe's willingly again.

  • We carpeted our upstairs back when we bought the house, that's the only experience I have.

We went with Lowe's. Everything went fine. We saved by ripping out the old carpet and moving the furniture ourselves.

We've since purchased new counters for the kitchen. We tried getting quotes from both Home Depot and Lowe's. Lowe's beat Home Depot's price so we decided to go with them, but the day that the sale expired at Home Depot Lowe's reneged their original estimate and doubled it. We walked away from it and will never go to Lowe's for a big job again.
