Del Valle vs. Hays?

Hi ladies! I'm about 90% done with my teacher's certification process and I've currently been offered substitute teacher positions at both Hays and Del Valle ISD. I have experience in Austin ISD but unfortunately I missed their cutoff date for sub applications this semester. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with these two districts and if you would recommend one over the other. I am slightly closer to Hays' schools, but I am concerned that there wouldn't be as many opportunities to sub over there.

Thanks so much in advance!

Re: Del Valle vs. Hays?

  • Maybe someone else will chime in with more recent experience, but I'd definitely go with Hays over Del Valle.  Especially if its closer to you.

  • I know two teachers at Del Valle and they have been searching for other jobs. Based on that, I would go with Hays. However, I don't know anyone with Hays, I just know it's a good school district.

CONGRATULATIONS on almost being done with certification!!!

  • hays is a good district. del valle has a different reputation.
  • I know several teachers in Hays and they love it! Most of them were with AISD before and switched over and havent looked back.

  • Totally off topic, but can I ask what your name represents?  I am an Aggie and have Great Danes, so was thinking we might have that in common! Big Smile
  • I would think that there would be plenty of opportunities at each level with Hays...I think there are 2 or 3 schools at each level (elementary, jr high & high school).
  • Thanks so much everybody, I was leaning toward Hays anyway and hearing from you all has been really helpful!

BOB- The Aggie part is pretty much dead on, but the "Daner" part is just a goofy spinoff of my actual name (Dana). I am, however, a SUCKER for big ol' dogs and you can't get much better than Great Danes! Do you have pics of your kiddos you wouldn't mind sharing? :-)

  • Why don't you do both?

  • I know several subs in Hays.  Some stay really busy, others don't.  I have kids in Hays and have been happy with their schools.
DH worked in Del Valle and now works back in AISD.  Del Valle was not wonderful for him.  I subbed there and was happy subbing... high school level only.  The elementary and middles are all over the place in terms of what to expect and too much to handle keeping track of which was which.  And I stayed VERY busy in DVISD.

If you are interested in staying as busy as possible, I would do both.
  • Hays all the way. I would avoid Del Valle.

I don't have any here at work, but I will try to post a few later this week!  :P
